I’m currently selling a house and it’s likely to go on for several months over winter. I’m not living there so currently the heating is fully off but I’m concerned about having no heating when winter kicks in and we begin to see low temperatures where pipes could freeze. I’ve read that you can connect the nest thermostat to the hub without a network connection (internet connection recently been disconnected) but not having any of the smart controls, I won’t know if the boiler suddenly eg drops pressure and stops working. Being able to remotely monitor this from another location would be useful and might save money by avoiding costly repairs. Curious is anyone has done this and found a good cheap way to run this system. I’m looking to buy a wifi hotspot with a low amount of data, presumably they don’t use that much to talk? Thinking of a pay as you go or very short term contract. Also wanted to avoid nest changing any schedule and me paying a fortune with these new ridiculous rates, especially for an empty house. Advice and shared experiences very welcome! Cheers

Google don't recommend it but you can absolutely connect it to a Wi-Fi hotspot or travel router with an in-built SIM card type solution. Google estimate it uses 50 MB/week upload and 50 MB/week download on average.
If you choose to go the Wi-Fi hotspot route, you would need 2 devices to set that up as below:
