Ticking sound from Nest Learning Thermostat

Alreadyauser
Community Member

I've made a thread about this about a year ago but, I did not find an answer to my question.

I am getting a fairly quiet ticking sound from the nest thermostat when It is in active heating mode. My other Nest does not make this sound when in heating mode. What would be causing this problem? I have an oil furnace with constant power to the thermostat from the furnace wiring.

I have come across this a few times, and the cause usually is the signs of a faulty battery. I think the processor struggles, and hence the clicking noise. Are you still getting a display OK, as the display usually goes blank?

The same thermostat is now giving me issues of not being able to connect to wifi. Nest refuses to give me a replacement as well.

That also can be an issue, as not enough power to the display. What's the voltage showing?

How old is the thermostat?

What was the outcome from last year when you posted the same issue?

The voltage is 3.5 V. I've tried all troubleshooting and nothing works.

This thermostat is a replacement from a previous and is 1 year old. the original thermostat purchase was just over 2 years ago now so, they are basing their replacement time off that original purchase.. Really let down by the warranty here and the product as It's otherwise great. My main floor has been going without a hitch for these close of 3 years.

That voltage is way to low, you need at least 3.7v

Try plugging a USB into the back for an hour, and see if that gets the battery charged better.

I assume all connections are good?

That's the trouble with a replacement, it carries on from the original purchase!

Returning back to the retailer/Installer would have been a far better way.

I'm in the UK, and the Nest warranty says 2 years, BUT here we have consumer law that covers us for retailers, and that covers for way over that period of time, 5 years +.

I've tried it all. I guess I'm **bleep** out of luck.

May be a long shot, but have you changed the 2 displays over? That would prove the wiring is good?

Sure have.

Looks like your in the horrible stuff in that case!!

You could always try and contact Nest again, you might get an agent that's helpfull another day....

My Thermostat had a low battery for and unknown reason and will not connect to my WIFI network. I've done all the trouble shooting given and still nothing. I'm looking to maybe speak to someone about my issues. At this point I have deleted it from my app and am trying to add it back with no luck.

Alreadyauser,

the Nest thermostat loves to have a power common wire.  When the Nest relies on the batteries, and the batteries become weak, the nest starts disabling WiFi and other features to preserve energy to still be able turn on the heat or cooling.

Thanks for your reply, but I'm confident that this is not the problem. I have another Nest Learning Thermo downstairs and have never had a problem with it. I've had that one for 3 years and this other I've already had to replace. The wirings the same and for the same furnace.

It cannot be that both thermostats are wired to the exact same furnace, because that would be an invalid configuration and would not work.  If this is the case, and what you have is possibly a zone controller, and the thermostats should be wired to the zone controller.

Yes. I have three zones, controlled independently by three thermostats, on three separate floors, all connected to the same furnace.

I appreciate your response, but I've already done all the simple "turn it off and on, blow in it" type trouble shooting.
