@ISG, you have a heat pump, which is electrical, and your indoor air handler is your forced air and must have an LP burner type furnace connected to your air handler.  In this case you have set the Auxiliary heat to never be used. I am just checking, do you have a LP gas furnace?

Thank you CW. This is a new house I just bought in the NC mountains. When I’m back up there this weekend I will check. Any advice on how I can tell if I have a gas furnace or not? Sorry for being so naive.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry for the delay. I'd love to help.

We're sad to see you go, BrianH. We hope we can make it up to you in the future. Send us a message if you change your mind.

@ISG, if you have a gas furnace there would be a small window on the front of the furnace where you should see a blue glowing flame. Also, you might smell like a little bit of gas when your heating is running.

I appreciate the help, @CoolingWizard and @ayazghusain1.

Best,

Jenelyn

Thank you Zoe. So I just got back to the house and there is no sign of a pilot light so I think I must have an electric furnace.

I guess I should change my settings right?

@ISG , I am sorry it took so long for me to reply. I hate that other users do not create their own thread for help and then clutter yours message thread. I just found your picture of the furnace.  Your furnace is an electric furnace.  Unfortunately, the installer did not mark which if any electric heat kit was installed.  It should have been marked in Column A of the label. I do not know much about North Carolina and the specific area your state your home is in.  Your old thermostat is wired with W1 and X. This is an indication there is Auxiliary heat and and emergency heat. As for your Nest Equipment setup, you do not have a “duel fuel” system, you have a single fuel system and that is Electric.  So I am going to walk you through how to change this.

At your thermostat, wake up the display, select SETTINGS, once in settings go to EQUIPMENT and select it. You need to choose CONTINUE, and CONTINUE.  Now we are going to go into PRO SETUP.
Once you select PRO SETUP, you will get a warning, select CONTINUE. Now you will see a representation of the nest backplate and wire attached.  Rotate the ring and select the W2 wedge and select it.  Now select the Heat Type and change it from LP to Electric. Rotate and select DONE.  When asked, you have a Single Fuel system.

Reach out to me if you need any additional help

There is no option to upload a photo. Is there an email address I can send the pick to?

FYI, the help page link goes directly to this thread, rather to a parent in the forum. It is unclear how to start a new thread, especially to those new here. Disparaging them is not useful.

@CourteVV , it is very simple to start a conversation. At the the top of the forum, in this case, Thermostats, you see the START CONVERSATION button.  It is that simple. And I am not disparaging any individual by name. When  multiple people start posting their problem inside another persons thread, it clutters the thread up and makes it difficult to follow original thread and support the original poster.

my system is a heat pump for AC and cooling with emergency heating.  Is this compatible woth Google nest.  Also , I wonder if I don't need the learning version as with a heat pump you don't want the temptation vary that much.

@CourteVV , the dark blue wire is your power Common and X wire is your Emergency heat and the W1 is your Auxiliary heat.

I have a heat pump for AC and heating. Not connected to the HVAC.  Will Google Nest work with this configuration?

Yes indeed your system is compatible with the Nest Thermostat.  Your wires in use are:

R; red wire, 24VAC power

Y1; yellow wire, Compressor Relay - Heat and Cool

E; brown wire, Emergency Heat

W2; white wire, Auxiliary Heat

O; Orange Wire, Reversing Valve relay

You have a blue wire not assigned. You should consider using this wire for the 24VAC Power Common. This will require you going to the Air Handler and make sure the blue wire is connected to the C terminal their. As well.

I have a left over wire  - Brown 'E' and no where to put it. The Google Nest only has 6 wiring slots.

What turned on - I get a Error code : E294 - no R - yet it is definitely connected.

Any ideas?

Thank you ,

Brian

@BrianH , on that thermostat you have, the single * is the only programable function connection.  It can only be programmed for a single function. And your Nest Model does not support your system configuration. You need a Nest Learning Thermostat in order to support heat pump with auxiliary heating And Emergency heating.

If the E and W2 wire go to the same place on the Air Handler, the Nest Thermostat can activate the Aux strips on its own when you select "emergency heat" in the app. This allows you to discard the E wire and use the Nest Thermostat and not the learning stat.

It hot here - thus am giving up. I called my heating guy, returning the nest and having an Ecobee installed tomorrow AM.

We had a American Standard thermostat on same brand of gas furnace. Wires don’t have colour coding and were labeled D-Data, R-24vac hot, and B-24vac common. There was also a fourth, white wire not mentioned in the manual and not connected to the previous thermostat. We have no idea how to wire our Nest into this. Help!

@MrsSommerfeld , your question is unique to and should be in its own message and not added to @ISG‘s original message thread.

Now then your American Standard system is using a digital communications interface and not the normal conventional HVAC control system. Most systems that have a digital communication interface also have conventional terminals as well.  You will be required to install a new 7 to 10 conductor thermostat cable between your thermostat and the air handler.

Hi folks,

@ISG, I just want to check if you were already able to change your thermostat settings. How's your Nest Thermostat now?

@MrsSommerfeld, I hope you got the answer you're looking for. Please let us know if you still have questions in mind, as we'll be willing to assist you.

I appreciate the help, @CoolingWizard.

Kind regards,

Jenelyn

I’m getting mixed messages whether Nest is compatible or not: connected wires are R, W, Y, G, O, B with a jumper between W2/X2 and W.

CoolingWizard

Platinum Product Expert

@Mokonski , on your old thermostat, I cannot quite see the letters behind the white wire and the jumper.  It looks like W2 and X.
You Blue wire in B is your Power Common.

The Orange  wire in O is your heat pump reversing valve. This changes the heat pump mode.
The Green wire in G is the Blower Fan Relay, this turns the blower fan on.
The Yellow wire in Y controls the Compressor relay.
The White wire in W is auxiliary heat. This is typically electric heat strips located in the air handler.
The jumper wire to W2/X is for emergency heat.
The Red wire in R is the 24VAC Power In.

The Blue wire connected to B is the Power Common.

Your system is fully compatible with the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation.

Great reply, thank you!

Have to ask, is this compatible with Nest thermostat (i.e. not the Learning thermostat)? I'm reading that there are some differences.

Hi folks,

@Mokonski, chiming in — based on the information given by CoolingWizard, your thermostat wires should be wired to our Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd generation. You can use this guide in installing and setting up your Nest Learning Thermostat.

@MrsSommerfeld, I want to check and see if you are still in need of any help. Please let me know, as I would be happy to assist and answer any questions you may have.

I appreciate your help here, @CoolingWizard and Jenelyn.

@Mokonski , i’m sorry for the delay in responding. Unfortunately because you have the auxiliary and emergency heat and the heat pump, etc. so you will actually require a nest learning thermostat.

I am installing the 3rd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat. I’m unsure of what to do with the W/E wire. Is it compatible?

CoolingWizard

@natasha3704 , your system is a conventional HVAC system.  The W/E wire is your primary heat. This wire will end up on W1.  Your wires in use are: Rc, W, G, Y.
