This thing has a life force of its own. Will merrily change to eco for no reason and decide whether we are in, out or died of hypothermia!!
why does a programmer get to decide when heating is on rather than me??
best place for this is in bin, will be asking my heating engineer for an old fashioned thermostat tomorrow!!

I'm assuming that you have the nest app on your phone and I hope I'm not stating the obvious, but if you open the app on your phone; from the home screen select the settings cog wheel top right. >Home / Away assist. I have mine set to "home". Lower down the Home /Away assist screen there is the choice of what decides whether you are home. I have mine set to the name of the thermostat. If phone is selected and your phone is off or you are out with it the heating is set back. Classic case I go out, phone is with me and wife at home freezes. Of course you can assign two phones. I struggle using a smart phone and it took me half an hour on youtube to understand the Nest but it works great for me. Or it did till I had internet problems. But even with that the stat still works as it should, I was just having problems operating it when I was not home.

Yes, as @Lansdorf says, it's probably Home/Away Assist that is deciding what temperature the Nest should aim at. A lot of people find it to be inaccurate. You can turn off Home/Away Assist entirely, and any other "smart" features while you're at it. Then the Nest should behave like an old-fashioned (albeit programmable) thermostat, and follow whatever schedule you set up.
