rental home with nest thermostat - Question

dmendell

Hello,

I have a VRBO type rental home and guests come at unscheduled times.

When they come in they walk past the Thermostat so I hope it goes into HOME mode.

Questions:

1) How long will the Thermostat stay in HOME mode so the heat comes on before it needs to be triggered again?

2) Since the occupancy is unknown, what is the best way to keep the Thermostat in HOME mode so the heat stays on while the guests are there.  Can't use their cell phone, too hard for rental management.  Are there current motion sensors that do not need any other controllers I can use that Nest Thermo can see?  I already have an alarm system.

3) Is there a way to trigger the HOME mode and keep it running using a relay closure.  I have that built into my alarm system.

4) If I set the Thermo to AWAY and leave or do it from my phone, will a person walking past it trigger it back to HOME?

Thanks All. (:-)

Hi dmendell,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Google Nest Community.

While it is a bit different to manage a temperature for a guest house, it has no definite time or specific temperature scheduled to follow, what we can recommend is to have your Nest Thermostat lock set. This way, your guest will be able to set their desired temperature without any access to its settings.

Hi folks,

Just one quick final check in here since activity has slowed down. We'll be locking the thread in the next 24 hours, but if you still need help, I would be happy to keep it open. If there's more we can do, just let me know.

Thanks,
Mel

Hi Jake,

I did see Ryan's post and I am doing the lock to set it at one temperature, no schedule as its in a snow area and we have a Pellet stove for primary heating.

What I wanted to know is if a 220 ohm 5watt resistor in series with the R lead is enough to keep the nest charged?  Its a simple 24 volt system to turn on the heater relay. The fan is triggered by the heat in the furnace box.

I will put a "small relay" across the series R lead's 220ohm resistor. The relay will be triggered by my alarm system "disarmed output" to bring the nest back into the control loop.

While the nest is out of the loop I have a hidden thermostat in parallel set at 45'f so nothing in the cabin freezes.

How does this all sound?

Dan
