PPP connection with Google Wifi

Pras

Hi folks,
I just have bought the Google Wifi (set of three) to improve my home wifi. Luckily I have a fibre modem from my ISP and a standard router (fritzbox). This router does only the PPP connection to my ISP and providing a poor wifi nettwork in my basement. So I want to get rid of this router and use instead my primary Google Wifi to make the PPP connection and the other two work as mesh/access point.

I followed these instructions: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/6246630?hl=en&visit_id=637932521557173698-1735528822&rd...

As soon as hit the the save button nothing happens in the Google home app and the Google wifi turns orange. It doesn't make any difference if the WAN port at the device is connected to the fibre modem, my switch or just open. It seems to get stuck somehow. It will stay in this condition forever.

Is there anything I could do wrong? Do I have to turn on IPv6 first, because my ISP connecction is a IPv6 Dual Stack lite connection? Any hints? I really was looking forward to install and use the new wifi system, but I'm close to return it and try something else.

Is there any chance to configure the device by browser?

Hi Pras,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with changing your WAN settings. I'd love to know more about this. Is your Google Wifi already online? Is your phone connected to it when you try to edit the WAN settings?

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward,
I'm already in contact with the Google Wifi support. But currently the problem is still not solved.
I've done the process now several times, with resetting to fectory settings in between. But it seems that the PPPoE settings aren't processed correctly, which leads to an unusable device.

To start from the beginning:

While connected to my existing router, I was able to start the device, go through the setup process and create a new wifi.

Then I disconnected the cable to my network and the Google wifi was stand alone. I connected to the new wifi and insert my ISP credentials to the PPPoE mask and hit the save button.

Then I connected my fiber modem to WAN port of the router, but there was no connection. Also the upload LED at the modem was flashing orange. And the Google wifi did blink orange as well.

I did a complete reboot of the router, but after boot up it was blinking again orange. I tried to establish a wifi connection to Google wifi and that was working, but the Google home app indicated that the router was not connected. The orange light did again blink orange. Also a reboot of the modem didn't help.

It looked like Google wifi didn’t process the PPPoE settings correctly and therefore the whole thing got messed up.

I gave it anothjer try after i issued a factory reset, but without success.
I also tried with a second Google Wifi with the same result.

Can you confirm that PPPoE is working correctly in general and that the setup process was correct as well?
Of course the device made an update the first time is did connect it to my network and the internet.

Thanks Pras

Hi Edward,

thanks for reaching out. I didn't get any feedback so far, but annyhow, I decided I want to check something else out. I will go for an overall approach, which means I will test unifi and omada. So I renew not only the wifi part of my network, as I planned originnally.

Thanks for your support Edward.

Best regards
Pras

Hi Edward,

I tried unifi as well as omada in the last days. With unifi I had a terribel experience. Even the wired network was not realy stable. Finally I did setup a omada network which works fine for me. Wired and wireless networks are stable and also several VLANs for guests, children, ... work as expected.

I know I compare a simple and afordable Google Wifi system with a much more expensive full size network system, but in the end I needed the extra functionality.

Thanks and best regards
Pras
