Reset to Original Device Name

Is it possible to reset a device back to its original name? I changed it, but would like to see what it was previously, and it's not showing up in the Device Info now.

Hi, Michael37.

Sorry for the frustration you've been having with your device not showing up. That sounds confusing and definitely not very convenient for management. Can you let me know what sort of device you're looking to reconnect? Is the device connecting to the network now and working correctly aside from not showing in the list?

Let me know a bit more and we can get this worked out for you. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks.

Hi, Jeff. Thanks for your help.

The device is connected, but part of the reason I want to see the original name is that I'm not actually sure WHICH device it is and thought there might be a hint in the default name.

I suppose I can block it from the network, and then, eventually, we'll probably figure it out. But it seems odd that there's no way to remove the custom name given to a device and revert to the original.

Hi, Michael37.

According to the help article on this, it suggests deleting the text in there to allow the original name to return. Here's that article: https://bit.ly/3o1aRK5.

It sounds like you're unable to edit that text at all though? Is the option just grayed out for you?

Hey, Michael37.

I just wanted to check in again to see if I got it right about the inability to edit text entirely. Hopefully you've been able to sort this out, but if not, just let me know and we can keep looking at it.

Thanks.

Jeff,

The link you provided goes to https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp?hl=en, which isn't an article about changing the name of a device.

When I go to the device screen and delete the text in the name field:

It leaves the existing device name in gray. There's no way to "Save" that I can tell, other than hitting the back arrow. When I do that, the device retains the name it had. It does not revert to the original default name.

Hey, Michael37.

Sorry for the late reply back here on this. It looks like your issue is more of an app issue than a device problem. Have you tried clearing the cache out on the Home app and trying the process again? If so, have you tried a full re-install of the app? If you have tried both those and still no luck, let me know. We can pick this back and up and get it sorted.

Thanks.
