My nest keeps playing sleep sound all night

ponkan75

Hi,

My google nest mini keeps playing sleep sound all night when I use the bedtime-routine. Earlier it stopped after about 1 hour, but now it keeps playing all night. I have activated the sleep sound country night.

What can I do to make it play for 1 hour again? I don’t want it to keep playing all night.

I have tried setting up a new similar routine, but it keeps playing through the night in the new routine as well.

I resolved my own issue by creating a custom routine that includes the custom action, “play country nights for 60 minutes”. Of course you can substitute any sleep sound for “country nights”.

Hey all,

We've heard feedback that turning off sleep sounds after 1 hour was insufficient for some of our users, so we made the decision to remove the end time. We're currently investigating ways to build a comparable solution and appreciate your patience.

Best regards,

Jake

Complaints have not worked here though. Maybe we used up our 1 fix of the year.

The idea of creating a new routine isn't a bad solution (I mean probably better than waiting for Google to do anything) but my problem is that they have 'land grabbed' all the useful keywords which you can't reuse or edit so it makes coming up with new triggers difficult.

I started having this same issue, around the same time. Google now ignores sleep timers, whether I say stop playing after an amount of time or at a certain time, and the workaround for sleep sounds using a custom command to play for a set amount of time also no longer works because it ignores the time limit.

Can't believe this issue has continued for so long. For the last week or so, neither my "good night" routine with a music timer nor my command to play music for x minutes will shut off at the designated time (although after the command Google repeats that speaker will turn off in x minutes). As others have mentioned, this is a key function for some of us. I will explore whether Alexa might be a better alternative.

Yes, it’s definitely gotten worse. My first workaround was making a custom command of having it play for however many hours. Then that stopped working I noticed. Then switched to just telling Google to play sleep sound for two hours and leave it at that. Now it won’t even do that. It just keeps playing until I say stop playing.

Just try the command like " Stop in 1 minute" google home did the reply that it will stop in 1 minute , but after that it just say "sorry I don't understand that" and keep playing the music.

I "fixed" the issue by using my phone to cast XM and using the XM internal sleep timer to turn off the cast. I shouldn't of had to do it this way given XM is integrated to Google, but here we are.

I would not even use the word that starts with the f you used. Their AI immediately treats that as a signal this issue is over.

Sleep sounds stopped working for me a while ago - just like everyone else. I then used a manual task to "Play ocean sounds for 60 minutes", but this too stopped working recently.

What I've now done is changed that task to

1) Custom command "Play ocean sounds"

2) Delay Task (1 hour)

3) Custom command "Stop ocean sounds", or "Stop"

This is getting absolutely ridiculous.

It's almost like google is trying to give us all headaches for months just to keep coming back to this community.

Every work-around somehow just stopped working recently and there is still no apparent solution to this simple timer function really have blown my mind.

People buy this device for home automation, not constantly telling the assistant what to do because some command changes and randomly function add-on/take-away.

I am truly dissappointed on how the dev team of google couldn't handle such easy request to bring their device back to usual, when so many of us complaining the same issue and dragging on for so long.

Does my solution above not work for you? It's working for me.

Yes I can confirm your method is working. Thanks for another workaround, however the built-in timer is still broken.

I found out just today that there is an "Auto Off""' option off i press the bell icon while the night sleeping sounds are playing. I just saw the option right now, but im going to see if it actually does that since i dont have the sleep detection feature turned on.

I would never remember to do that. I think the delay action of a manual STOP is better. That has been available since the last update in the Preview version.

If you have a Nest Hub Gen 2 with sleep sensing you can ask it to "Play Country Night Sounds" or whatever sound you prefer. When it starts playing you can

press the sleep timer icon on the bottom right of the screen which gives you 3 options

1. Set an amount of time to switch off (which is what I use)
2. Switch off when it senses that you have fallen asleep (which didn't work for me as it was still going when I woke up!)
3. Off
As I said this works for me but I still think that they shouldn't have messed around with it, Easier to say Hey Google, play Country Night Sounds for 60 minutes (or whatever) and job done.

On all of my 1st & 2nd gen Nest hubs, the sleep timer fault now seems to have been resolved. Yippee!

Hi @Teletone

When I read your post I thought surely not. Tested it out twice and was quite taken back to find it actually worked.  Two Nest audio 2nd gen. Firmware has not changed by the way still on 324896.

It seems it has now been fixed. Thank you.

Yes, I too noticed the firmware was the same. Fingers crossed it remains working.........until the next time?

Yes, sleep timers seem to be back and working for me.  I've tested it a few times, and so far so good. Finally!!

My nest sounds still continue to play all night.  I thought Google was going to fix this problem and give us a choice of how long to play the sounds.  Why was it changed in the first place. 12 hours is way too long. It helps to fall asleep but wakes me up as it continues playing all night.

Hi @SunnyCB

Just wondering how are you initiating the sleep sounds. Generally whenever I want the nest audio speakers that I have stop playing such things as sleep sounds or any music for that matter after a certain time I just say to them 'OK google stop playing in 10 minutes'  and they then stop after this time. Also as a test I just tried the command 'OK google play sleep sounds for 5 minutes' and that also stopped after 5 minutes.

Open Google Home
Click Routines
Click "+" in the bottom right to create a new routine
Name it whatever you want (I named mine "Stop Sleep Sounds"
Click [+ Add starter]
Click At a specific time
Select a time that is after you typically go to sleep (mine is 11:30pm)
Set it to repeat every day
Add starter in the bottom right
Click [+ Add action]
Click Try adding your own
Type in "Stop casting to ______ speaker" with whatever speaker name you typically say goodnight to
Add action in the bottom right
Ensure the "Device for audio" at the bottom is set to the speaker you typically say goodnight to, or as the "Device that started the routine"
Save the routine

Regards,

Will

Creating a work around doesn’t solve the initial problem…….

My google nest is doing the exact opposite. Before, it used to play all night; now, it disconnects after some time. How do I fix this??

When connected to Spotify.

Has this issue been resolved yet? My Nest still plays sleep sounds through the night and I have to command it to stop.

There's been a few workarounds posted already about this issue. Personally, I have a routine scheduled to start/trigger at 3am everyday (trigger by time, not voice command), to turn off all lights, turn off the family room TV, and to tell my bedroom speaker to stop.

Since I sometimes go to bed at 12am and other times at 1:30am, having everything automatically turn off at 3am just works best for me.

If you normally go to bed at around the same time each night, perhaps having a separate routine triggered by a specific time 90 minutes after you're normally in bed, can stop your endless sleep sounds?

Thank you for sharing that. That's about the only solution we have at this point, Google isn't fixing their bugs. My cookbook on my kitchen display hasn't worked for like 2 years. Last I heard from them on my ticket was at least 6 months ago. And I just got an email last week on a playback error I was experiencing on YouTubeTV, asking what the issue was. I don't even remember the issue or when I submitted it, but the show I referenced in my message to them has been off the air for like 4 years...

I keep having to change this routine every 6 months or so when Google seem to "fix" (botch) this function. My one that has been working for the last 6 months "play fan sounds for 60 minutes" has now stopped working for the past 3 nights and have woken up to it still playing in the morning, so now seems I have to go back to putting a stop action delayed 60 minutes after starting the sleep sounds. Seriously amateur stuff. Anyone have experience with Alexa, do they have the same issues? Time to dump Google and find something that works. It's seriously getting more and more retarded, even trying to set an alarm now, it asks what time do I want the alarm, I say a time and it starts a Google search on 630.

This has started happening again on my google mini's  I ask to play sleep sounds for 5 mins, and 2 hours later its still playing.

You can also try setting a "sleep timer" either verbally or within your routine. Say "set sleep timer for 5 minutes."

HOWEVER, for this to work within a routine, you have to be creative and use an "experimental" action to play the music and then perform some unnecessary time-strenuous actions before setting the sleep timer (because the music needs to be actively playing before requesting a sleep timer.). I have my bedtime routine play the music, turn off the already turned off TV, shuffle the music, and then ask for the sleep timer to be set.

Screenshot 2023-07-31 104741.png

WARNING: Be sure to use the wording "set sleep timer for" and not "set sleep timer to". If you use the word "to" the mini speaker will say that it doesn't understand. I learned this the hard way, as well.

It is now the last day of July 2023, and the problem persists. Saying "play Elton John for 30 minutes" works periodically, but not the sleep sounds function.

I went ahead and created a routine that triggers at 2am every night with the single action of "stop bedroom speaker".

If your speaker is still playing sounds or music all night long, consider having a separate routine trigger at 2am or 3am, with an experimental action to "stop [device name]".

Google, are you monitoring this?

What I don't understand about this issue (which is extremely annoying by the way), is that you were able to remove the auto off after x amount of time, why can't you simply put it back? Based on the number of comments about this, it sounds to me that more ppl want the auto off than ppl who want sounds to run all night. Those who want sounds running all night, could have created a custom command for the number of hours they wanted sounds to run. It might have worked for them if the original programming had been left alone. The work around after you removed the auto off certainly has only resolved the problem temporarily as the comments clearly indicate. I can understand why some users are so upset about this. I recently had the same problem with my good morning routine not coming on after the alarm was turned off and I had to set up an entirely new and separate routine for after alarm is silenced, to get the good morning routine to run again. Many ppl had the same problem. My comment at that time was that we shouldn't have to find a work around for something that has been working fine for years. So now that the work around for playing sounds is not working,  I'm expecting that the work around for good morning routine will stop working eventually, too. You seriously have to figure out what programming was removed or changed and fix it.

Well said! My night routine recently start to malfunction with the simple alarm setup command (Answering wake-up time turns into search result). It gets sooo annoying because the experience with this device so far was just constantly tweaking and trial & error by users themselves. Everything worked on day 1 and all of a sudden the most simple tasks fail after months of usage.

And the most frustrating part is the lack of support by google, as if they don't really know how to fix the problem so you guys just go ahead and reset the device or if not try this and that and good luck.

Yes I've been having an issue with my cookbook not working for years! When I told it "next step" in the recipe it started giving me search results for next step. I opened a ticket for it, I think they followed up one time like 6 months later. I haven't heard anything since. It's still not working. I've even upgraded to the next gen display so it wasn't a hardware issue. I don't think they know or care about solving problems on existing products, they're just trying to invent the next new thing.

Here's the fix, return all your Google devices for a refund, as they don't work as described, and invest in a different system.
