I Can't Mirror To My Chromecast

Kblanco1
Community Member

I have a first generation Chromecast.  When I had a service outage everything came back up except the Chromecast.  I'd been thinking of replacing it and so I bought the current model new.  Turns out I'd rather use my old G1 (cause it booted right into my pictures) but at this point I don't care which version.

The problem is that I can't mirror my Android phone screen through the Chromecast to my television.  I get the device set up and I can cast YouTube and my music player but can't mirror.  If I'm lucky I can mirror once in a while for a few minutes if I'm very lucky.  Otherwise I hit the mirror button and I'll get a message about my device isn't optimized hit okay and nothing.  I've factory reset both my Chromecasts more than once.  I only use it for mirroring as I do all else on my Roku.

Using Moto G Stylus, Android 10 or 11.

Chromecast 1st and 3rd generation.

A Vizio E series television.

Hi Kblanco1,

Thanks for reaching out. It is important that your phone’s microphone is not in use while attempting to mirror. You may need to disable the screen overlay.

A screen overlay is a part of an app that can display over other apps. Chat heads in Facebook Messenger is a good example. This function is visible on Android version 6.0 and up, and it affects the ability of the Android device to do screen mirroring. This needs to be disabled from your Android device.

Try the following:

  1. Go to phone Settings.
  2. Tap on Apps > Apps Manager > Applications.
  3. On the top right corner, tap the gear icon or the three vertical dots.
  4. Look for “Draw over other apps” or “Apps that can appear on top”.
  5. On some Android devices, you may need to tap on “Special Access” first, before you can get to “Draw over other apps”.
  6. After a list of apps appears, tap on Google Play Services.
  7. Switch off to disable.
  8. Reboot the device. Then, try to cast the screen.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,
Kimy
