Hey everyone,

Our teams have spent countless hours listening to users and reimagining the experience that will be the center of the smart home. Today, we’re happy to share what we’ve been working on based on your feedback. We're rolling out new features, simplifying interactions, and continuing to bring the best of the Nest and Google Home apps into one experience. And soon, we’ll be bringing some of our most highly requested features to the Google Home app. From improved camera views and multi-device compatibility, to organized favorites and help setting up compatible devices in a matter of minutes, we’re excited for you to try out the redesigned Google Home app.

Read on to get all the details and learn how you can try the new features before they’re widely available and subscribe to the community blog for future updates.

Your home, your way

As the number of smart devices in your home grows, we know that not all of your devices are equally important. We know you want to personalize the app experience to your preferences and need a more intuitive UI to help get things done faster.  With this in mind we rebuilt the app from the ground up, focusing on making your experience more customizable, intuitive, and organized.

We’re introducing a five tab layout so you can easily find and access what you need to control your smart home:

  • Favorites (New!): Customize your favorites to easily access your most important devices, actions and automations in one place. We also added spaces where you can organize important devices in one simple view, like your lights, cameras, or thermostats. And next year, you’ll also be able to create your own custom spaces with the perfect combination of devices, actions, and automations. Plus, the new media mini player shows you what’s playing in your home and lets you quickly pause, turn up the volume, or access the full remote.
  • Devices: View all your compatible smart home devices, organized by room
  • Automations (New!): A dedicated space to create and manage automations
  • Activity: Activity/history feed for what happened at home throughout the day
  • Settings (New!): Your one-stop shop for all relevant settings

A completely refreshed camera experience

We’ve listened to feedback from long-time, dedicated Nest users about their experiences with cameras and doorbells in the Home app. Those learnings enabled us to enhance our camera experience by bringing over the best of the Nest app into the Home app. In the coming weeks, we will be rolling out:

  • Camera Live Views: With Favorites, you can now view your Nest camera and doorbell live feeds right when you open the app. Simply add your cameras to the Favorites tab for quick viewing, no additional clicks required. You can also view all of them together in the new Cameras space or alongside other devices by room in the Devices tab.

  • New Camera Controller: Compatible with our latest cameras and doorbells, you can enjoy a refreshed camera controller that includes beloved Nest app features, like vertical video history timeline, quick switching between event and timeline views, and fine-level video scrubbing within an event to help you quickly find the moment that matters to you.

Public Preview

We’re excited for all these new features to be available, and want to get them in your hands as soon as possible. If you’re interested, you’ll be able to try out the features before they are broadly available as part of the Google Home Public Preview. Learn more in our Help Center.

Fast Pair with Matter

Setting up a smart light bulb can feel like it requires an engineering degree. With Fast Pair for Matter, this will literally become plug and play. Your Android phone will automatically detect a Matter device and help you securely set it up quickly. Matter setup and app linking will be available by default on billions of Android devices with Google’s launch of Matter support later this year.  We are even working directly with top device makers to ensure we have support across as many Matter-supported devices as possible. We’re also updating our existing Google Nest smart speakers, smart displays and routers to control Matter devices.

Because of your feedback, we continue to evolve and strive to bring the latest and greatest to your smart home needs. We know that some of these features were long awaited, so let us know which ones you’re most excited about in the comments below!

What about support for older Nest cams?  Do I still need 2 apps to view history or get alerts depending on the cam version?

This is encouraging, especially with those of us with older Google Nest cameras and doorbells!

I hope that, when Google Nest says they are providing "a more unified and organized smart home" that "combines the best of the Nest app and the best of Home app", "bring[s] the best of the Nest and Google Home apps into one experience", "bring[s] some of our most highly requested features to the Google Home app", "bring[s] over the best of the Nest app into the Home app", and has "a refreshed camera controller that includes beloved Nest app features...", it means that our older Google Nest cameras and doorbells that currently work fully only in the Google Nest app will be able to use this "more unified smart home", this "one experience", and not have to continue to use the separate Google Nest app.

And when Google Nest says "Watch your compatible Nest cams live from most web browsers via the new Google Home for web interface", I hope that this means our older Google Nest cameras and doorbells will be able to use this new web interface, and not have to continue to use the separate home.nest.com website.

It’s completely absurd that Google didn’t lead off all of today’s blog announcements with what the plan is to address the disaster of legacy Nest camera users being integrated into the Home app with full features. Complete slap in the face to the most loyal and early adopters of Google products. It’s clear the focus is on catering to newer customers.  I’ve been a Nest customer since 2014 and have seven nest cameras, 5 hubs, thermostat, and Google WiFi.  We’re done waiting for attention to the legacy nest issue. Never again purchasing a Google device.

Why not just go back to the Nest app for the cameras?  It is so much better, the Google Home App is trying to do too much IMO.  The Nest App was perfect for what it did and moving to the GHA was 10 steps the wrong way.  It doesn't sound like the upgrade is going to fix my concerns so I'm going to try a new platform that is just for security cams.

Users are still waiting to see what color crayons you gave the developers.  Yes some of us have signed up for the early release.  Yes us users are still waiting to see if ALL nest products are going to be included.  Remember the Nest protect and the alarm?  Bet we only see Google Chrome integration and all things that google feels we need like tiktok.  Still waiting still using two apps for products called Nest

I just received the public preview version of Google Home app. I have specific feedback I would like to leave for the Public Preview team, but there is nowhere to do this.

When I launch the app, go to Settings (bottom right), Public preview, Share feedback, I am asked three questions, bit not given the opportunity to enter text to share specific feedback.

This page says "(Optional) If there are any details you'd like to add, share them in the provided text box.":

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/12494697#zippy=%2Csubmit-feedback

There is no text box.

Is this a bug/oversight?

@ realrobertj,  I was confused by this at first as well.  Where you see the text that says "Have feedback? We'd love..."  you touch there and type your feedback.

@EmptyNester - Thanks for your reply, but I am not seeing "Have feedback? We'd love..." Anywhere in the Public Preview version of the Home app.

For context, can you share the steps you are taking from the time you launch the app until you are seeing this text?

@EmptyNester - I should point out that I know how to get to the general feedback screen for any Google Home/device by tapping my avatar at the top-right and the Feedback, but I am trying to leave feedback specific to the Public Preview version of the Home app.

Try this.  Go to one of your cameras at the point where you are looking at the LIVE or Recorded Events.   It is from that screen where you hit 3-dots icon in the upper right corner of the screen and there you will see another "FEEDBACK" option.  Select that. and you can leave feedback or ask for feature enhancements.  Let me know if that works.

@EmptyNester - Thanks for pointing that out. Still, I am looking to leave specific feedback around the  public preview app.

For example:

  • Start tab when launching app - In the current public app, the start view is devices (by room). Now the the Public Preview is defaulting to a "Favorites" tab - I would like the ability to specify the start tab.
  • Reorder favorites - There does not appear to be the ability to do this.

If the Public Preview team wants feedback other than the five-level Likert scale questions, hopefully they will communicate the proper channel to the preview testers.

Thanks again!

Yes,  I agree that would be a better way. But for now I'm using that particular feedback option for things I have reported similar to what you are talking about.

On a slightly different subject I posted another thread here a few days ago regarding the fact that on the most recent update to the Preview app last week I see absolutely not changes or new functions.   Am I missing something?  Do you see anything that has changed?

@EmptyNester - I will follow your lead and just note in all feedback that it is related to public preview.

As for changes in version, I am new to public preview (less than 24 hours), so I cannot say.

@lrobertj,  I am pretty sure it automatically reports that you are on the preview version by the fact that it reports things likes that version number of the app, The OS (iPhone or Android) and the version number of those as well and other pertinent stats.

@MrJinx - You should be able to leave the public preview program, sometime after which your version of the Home app will revert back to most current public/stable version by opening the Home app and then:

  1. Settings icon (bottom-right)
  2. Scroll down to Public Preview
  3. Leave Public Preview

If you want to be 100% more helpful, perhaps other than comments of "bull of bugs, trash, garbage", you could share anything specific that is not working/acting as you would expect/etc.

@MrJinx - It's unfortunate that a moderator hasn't removed you from here yet.

I feel sorry for anyone who has to read your trash/garbage. I'm sure you're even more unpleasant in real life. You clearly need a hug, Mr. Jinx xo

Is the Home app finally going to include timestamps on downloaded videos?  Because they are basically useless for legal issues when there are no timestamps.  It’s shocking oversight on google’s part, and I think many people wouldn’t have bought nest cams/used the home app if this was known ahead of time

@Cs3you're 100% right. They've had ample time to include what can only be described basic (I'd even considering calling them essential) surveillance camera functions and features. I believe I posted somewhere on the community forums a year ago. https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Cameras-and-Doorbells/Substandard-feature-using-Google-Nest-C...

Of the things I reported, I think the only thing they fixed was saving clips >5min and allowing you to view your cameras from a browser (currently Live view only). Still, 12 months later and the basic surveillance features aren't in production yet? Ridiculous.

#1 on that list of features is a Timestamp as you've stated.
#2 being able to search for a specific date and time window. Instead having to constantly slide through the timebar, or sorting through the go awful "history" feature.
#3 is being able to export video for ANY SPECIFIED TIME WINDOW. the amount of incidents missed by their "AI detection" is frustrating. I've had to use a third party screen recording app (XRecorder) to capture my phone's screen as the video is playing back, just so I can get a copy of my own footage to hand over to the police.
