How do I add Nest Protect that is out of reach?

Prabs

So we bought a home a year ago and I can't add one of my nest protects because it is too high on the ceiling (out of reach) for me to scan the barcode.  Is there a way to add the product by long pressing the button if I find a pole or something to reach it?

Hey Camroonnnn,

Sorry for the delayed response but thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest Community.

I'm afraid that in order to add a Nest Protect to your Nest account through the Nest app, you really need to take it down to scan the QR code or enter the entry key nest to it. I also suggest that you write down the Entry Key for each Protect you install and keep this number in a safe place in case you need to redo the setup in the future,

Thanks, I'll just have to find a really long ladder at some point.

It is extremely bad and thoughtless design to put essential information on the back of a device that is intended to be attached to the ceiling.  Ring puts their QR code on the side of their devices, which is much smarter.  Google should update its software to read the BIOS of the device to get the necessary codes.

This is an issue I wish would get fixed - I have 20 foot ceilings.  To install it the first time, we did it while painters had scaffolding in the house.  With the requirement to scan the QR code, I simply won't be able to add them to my account.  And it'll likely drive my purchasing decision in a different direction when we replace the other smoke detectors.

Ditto ! There is a way to wipe it without taking it down but then you still need the **bleep** code to set it up...

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting here in the community and sorry for the delay. All the setup codes and QR codes are unique to each Nest device that's why during setup you really need to get it or scan it from the actual device. Hit this link for more information. If you have other questions and concerns, feel free to let me know.

Regards,
Emerson
