Nest Protect P009(0.80) error

VT64

Hi, I just bought the Nest Protect, not sure if it's Gen1 or Gen2 so I assume it's a Gen2.  I've got hit with Nest Protect P009(0.80) error.  I'm reading all the threads and trying all that, I still can get it to connect.  I waited a day later and tried again, I still get the same error.  Any suggestion?

Hi there,

Thanks for posting in the Google Nest Community forum and for being a step ahead of us. I'm sorry for the trouble this may have caused you. To isolate the issue further, could you please create a new home structure and try adding your Nest Protect there? Keep me posted.

I appreciate your help, @JillG

Best,

Jenelyn

Hi @VT64

I've also seen an uptick in community members posting about that error code. I'll escalate over to our support team and see if they can help.

Here is the Nest Help Guide for that error: Troubleshoot a P002, P008, P009, P013, or P018 Nest Protect message - Google Nest Help

Thanks for the reply.  I just want to provide more information on our setup to see if the support team can help.  I have internet provided by Comcast Xfinity and using cable modem router Motorola MB8611.  Our home wifi is using Netgear Orbi RBR50.  My Nest account currently has 1 Nest Thermostat, 1 Nest doorbell, and 4 Nest Camera.  I was able to add them to Nest account without any problem.  Nest Protect is something different.

Hi @JillG , another thread here about the P009 (0.80) including some details about how someone got around the issue and I gave detailed info on my situation (and why I cannot easily do what OP did, but hopefully it can help the product team fix this).

I also have nest thermostat and doorbell which I added without issue. Cannot add the nest protect after many factory resets and retries.

Another update.  I switch out the Motorola cable modem and replace it with my old cable modem Arris Surfboard SB6190.  The problem still persist with the same error message, P009(0.80).  I cannot add Nest Protect.

Can you please post a step by step of creating a "new home structure"?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Jenelyn,

Wow, it works by following your suggestion to create a second home on the Nest App.  The Nest Protect can be added it there.  So, should I just leave it there on the 2nd home and all other Nest devices on the 1st home?

Thanks

I also was able to add both of mine to a new home.

Hey folks,

That's good to hear! You can try to add your Nest Thermostats to your new home structure or just leave as is.

Best,

Jenelyn

Hi Jenelyn,

I echo the below comment about this as a workaround/bandaid. It doesnt' make sense to have this as the way to get a nest protect added to an existing home. At this stage, I have to remove the thermostat and my camera, and now re-add to the new home which is time-consuming.

I'm going to echo @Sparkmeister . This should be insights for the Google Product team that clearly something is broken during adding to the Nest Account / Home. In this thread you will see more details on how someone else worked around the issue (removing all their devices and then adding Protect, and re-adding devices) and I gave details into my situation. I'm hoping this is going to the Google Product team.

Hi Jenelyn,

Everything works great.  Thank you for your help.

The only comment that I have is the solution that you gave (creating another home) is more like a workaround the problem.

Google Nest should fix the problem that Nest Protect can be added to the same home without creating another home.

Thanks

I have several Nest Protect, since 2018, and everything was fine until about a week ago. I tried all the recommended solutions. I deleted the existing Home and created new Home. Try adding Nest Protects, still error message P009(0.80). ??

Hey! Do you have a Nest Hello doorbell (the old glossy black one)? If you do remove it from the app then try adding the Protect again.

Greetings,

I only have Nest Protects. Two days ago I decided to try all the solutions recommended again, reset to default settings, deleting home, rebooting router (ASUS RT-AS86S) and finally able to add the Nest Protects without any error messages. I've had them since 2018, only now did I have problems. Firmware Version 3.5.0.3

I have just changed broadband supplier in UK and my Nest Protects no longer work due to the dreaded P009 error. The firmware version is 3.5.0.3. It nearly gets there but fails at the last step (adding to network). I have tried everything and it has failed. Really don't want to Create a new home as advised. This is b*****s as they say in UK. Do my Protects work i.e are my kids going to die in a fire even if not part of the network? Any suggestions welcomed!

I've recently upgraded my home network and since then was unable to add my Nest Protect successfully (error P009 0.80).  All other devices connected without error.  Tried out the 'new home' solution above, and the Nest connected without issue.

Would love to see this fixed so I can re-add my Protect to my main 'home'.

No.. it’s completely ridiculous that you need to set up another ‘home’ just for protects.. get it sorted please!!!

I agree.  Adding another home is a workaround.  It's not a fix.  Right now, I have 2 homes on my app.

This was driving me crazy for a week and I finally figured a fix (at least for me) and it worked immediately. What I had been instructed to do was move as close to the router as I could during the install. I was literally placing the Nest Protect next to the router and I just kept getting the error. Then I saw people saying you had to uninstall any other Nest doorbells or cameras, which I did not want to do, but it  made me think if the Nest Protect is trying to connect through my doorbell, maybe I need to move it closer to the doorbell and not the router. I walked outside and placed it right up against the doorbell. The doorbell came up on the app while I was going through the connection process and the Nest Protect connected right away to my account. So if you have another Nest camera or doorbell. Try placing your Nest Project right on top of it and then start the connection process. It seems like the Nest Protect tries to connect to your account through existing devices instead of going through your router. Problem solved, at least for me, hope it works for some others. I had to literally have the Nest Protect touching the Nest doorbell.

Hello everyone,

Although creating a new home structure is not really part of the troubleshooting steps, this workaround is accepted as a as a workaround to solve this situation. However, you can first try to follow the steps below before you decide to create a new home structure.

  1. Reset the joining device to default.
  2. Restart the modem and router.
  3. Move all devices being used for pairing closer to the router.
  4. Check the network settings.

@winterwolfes, thanks for sharing the steps you did to sort things out, and I appreciate the gesture.

Let us know if you have any other questions. We're happy to help.

Regards,

Zoe
