Nest Protect just issued a smoke emergency alarm but there was none

At about 2:03 AM EDT we were awakened by the Nest Protect 2 in the bedroom hallway beeping, flashing red, and announcing "Smoke emergency in one room" or something very similar to that. There was NO "Head's up" pre-alert. The device is about ten feet from my head and the bedroom door was open. There was NO room name given. When we test the devices each one of the three Protect 2's has always announced the room names when cycling through each Protect 2. Yes, Head's Up IS enabled on all three devices.

There was NO smoke in any room. All three Nest Protect 2 devices were flashing red. The false alarm lasted maybe one minute and then a message similar to "The smoke emergency has ended" was heard. We are NOT in an area where we are currently affected by the Canadian wildfires.

My wife and I are retired firefighters so we're kind of hyper-sensitive to things like this. The alarm lasted maybe one minute at most and ceased. There was NO alert in the Nest app.

The Nest app Protect History shows no alerts BUT under Technical Info for "Basement" it says "Last Update about 25 minutes ago" which would have been about 2:04 AM. The other two Protect 2 devices say "Last update about 19 hours ago". Software on all three is v3.5rc3.

We've had Nest Protect devices for many years, upgrading to Protect 2 when the original Protect 1's went end of life. We have NEVER had a false alarm before when home.

EDIT: In addition to NO notifications on an Android phone, an iPhone, an iPad, and the web interface, the Nest Camera integration did NOT automatically create a video clip on any of the seven cameras. But I still have a "Protect Event" video in View Clips from late 2018 so that function worked at one time. Yes, Works With Protect has all cameras checked in the Nest app.

This lack of notifications and the multitude of posts about the problem is very disappointing. We specifically bought Nest Protects because we sometimes leave the dog at home. On one fire call the people came home and found a fire had created a ton of smoke and killed their dog but the smoke detector was beeping away; there just was no one to hear it.. Protect used to give us confidence that we might lose the house but hopefully the dogs would be able to be rescued.

Any guesses as to what happened will be gratefully appreciated. Right now, based on that Last Update time stamp, it seems like the Basement device triggered the false alarm but the voice definitely did not say "Basement".

I have seen multiple posts about lack of notifications, lack of room notify, and false trips, but no confirmed fix or acknowledgement.

In the meantime, I think our best bet as a customer base is to make these problems known outside Google, so a trend can be established. Could you please take a moment to report this issue to the Consumer Product Safety Commission at: https://www.saferproducts.gov/IncidentReporting

This reported issue os not a matter of user-friendliness in the app. The reported failure including lack of correct room name alerting is a life safety hazard. This is not the first report of the "in one room" statement or incorrect room alerting, which can change the person's actions in the limited time to evacuate from a fire.

What is the case number for the ticket to developers that has been opened based on this thread?

Yes, that is my plan. I have filed multiple NHTSA complaints for vehicle defects when the manufacturer  blew me off. BTW, thanks for your participation here. I could tell the lack of notifications was a known problem by looking at your posts.

I don't know if the lack of a video clip is due to the cameras being turned on overnght; maybe.

I was able to listen to multiple cameras and I learned I was correct, it was the Basement Protect 2 that caused the alarm. The camera in the basement heard it say "Smoke in the basement" but the other cameras upstairs only heard the other Protect 2's say "in one room". The line of sight distance between the different Protect devices is barely 20 feet. Definitely got our attention for sure and that's what matters, if we're home....

It's been fourteen hours and no app notifications yet. And to the Google Artificial Incompetence bots, please stop posting that link to the Nest notification article and use your bot sensor eyes to actually read the article. The article says it is not possible to disable critical notifications so please stop assigning blame to the owners. We're the ones paying the bills that provide your electricity.

I did vacuum out all Protect 2 devices today but they were not dirty visibly. So far no more alarms. I guess the "good" news is I can indirectly rely on a camera detecting "Talking" inside the home when the home is supposed to be vacant.

Thanks for the quick reply.
