Switch Nest Thermostat E to Nest 3rd Gen

I moved into a new house with a Nest Thermostat E already installed. I want to switch it out with a Nest 3rd Gen Thermostat that I brought with me on my move. Can I just pop out the Nest E and plug in my 3rd Gen? While the base has more wire options on the 3rd Gen, I would just use the same ones that are already installed on the Nest E base. They seem to be the same size with the same pin connectors.

You can try but I think nest3 has more function so might not work. You should be able to swap the mounting base & connect wires to same slots just don’t let wires touch each other. Good luck.

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry for the delay. You have to use the base of your Nest Learning Thermostat for the display to be compatible. I suggest taking a photo of the wires you have on your Nest Thermostat E before removing them. Ensure to turn the breaker off before uninstalling your old thermostat.
