Does Google.wi-fi replace your router?

Jassav

Quite an easy question this, but I'm confused before I buy a Google WiFi point.

Does the Google WiFi physically replaces your main router/modem that connects to your provider?

In other words if I install the Google WiFi can I disconnect my old router. Or does it still need to exist in place to provide the main connection to the new Google WiFi.

Thanks in advance.

Google Wifi and Google Nest Wifi are indeed designed to replace your existing router. Depending on your setup, and if you have a seperate modem and router, you may need to keep the modem and connect that to your Nest router or primary Wifi point.

Hi David, thanks for the reply. The reason I'm asking is that I've had my router which connects to my provider changed at least 3 times but I still get flaky WiFi, even if I'm sitting next to it.

What I would like to try and achieve is to eventually get rid of my existing router and get better WiFi across the whole house.

What I don't want to do is to purchase a Google or Nest primary router and it's still forced to connect to the old router and therefore will still experience flaky connections.

I can appreciate that. Unfortunately, the only way to know for sure will be to test it. If it doesn't improve things for you, you can normally return an item you bought from the Google Store within 15 calendar days after the day you received it. The return window is even increased further for the holiday season, after November 26.
