Hi all,
Like the title, says, my 500/500 Fiber Internet is getting throttled by the Google WiFi mesh system to about 100/100 or 90/90 -- all wired connections and wireless connections are affected.
Interestingly, the Home app speed tests all show the correct speeds, usually around 485/490 which is correct. But a speed test with the puck wired directly to my PC is showing the throttled 90/90 or 100/100 speeds.
A network restart (Google WiFi puck restart) initiated through the Home app fixes the problem temporarily. All devices then get the correct speeds, wired and wireless. Unfortunately, a day or max 2 days later, the same thing happens again - throttled speeds down to 100/100. Tried my other router, no issues. Tried directly from the ONT, no issue.
This is not a DNS issue or anything like that, it seems like a strange software issue. What can be done? Is there a fix in place?

Sounds like it's related to QoS (quality of service), built in mechanism to prioritize what the firmware think is important traffic. Like VoIP (Teams, Zoom) and gaming. Raw bandwidth is not all that counts for good end user experience. 🙂
But when you have 500/500mbps fiber, QoS is not really neccessary.
It might also be a device on your network going rogue. Sonos with SPT (spanning tree protocol) for instance. What other devices do you have, that could be relevant here?
If you haven't already, a factory reset of all the devices, then set up from scratch, could also be worth a try.

It's worth noting that this just started happening maybe in the last 1-2 months. Also worth noting that I'm an IT Senior Systems and Network Admin by trade, with a close eye on my home network.
- Priority traffic is disabled.
- Factory Reset fixed nothing.
My home network includes the following:
- Personal Cell Phone on WiFi
- Wired PC
- Wired Printer
- 3 TVS, wired
- 2 Streaming Sticks, WiFi
- 1 Synology NAS
Network analytics, PRTG, WireShark show no anomalies in my network, or any weird traffic or dropped packets. This issue happens only with the Google WiFi router, both wired and wireless, anda network restart consistently fixes it, albeit temporarily. My other two routers do not have this issue at all. Ran them for a week each without any throttling.
I did some more research, and now I'm thinking the below thread shares common issues as myself. Looks like there are a TON of merged threads that got thrown into it too:

Hey, everyone.
This is actually part of an ongoing issue that we're tracking. Right now I don't have a timeline for a fix, but I do know it's being worked on and I will update the thread as soon as I know more.
Thanks.

Has this issue been sorted?
im currently on giganet with an eero 6e router my connection speed is 945mbps down and 936mbps up
remove it and use the google nest WiFi gen 2 router and the downs are around 700mbps and up speed is around 100mbps
needless to say it’s definitely a google issue
04-04-2023 03:08 AM
Resolved thank you
04-04-2023 03:32 AM
How? By disconnecting and using another brand!?
04-04-2023 09:10 AM
Also checking in to see how you were able to resolve your issue.
This throttling started for me about 3 or 4 days ago. When I connect via wire directly into my ONT, I'm getting 790-950mbps, but wired through my Google Nest Wifi H2D I'm getting 85-95mbps.

I am having the same issue. Lots of bandwidth coming in. But it appears the points just are not the good
12-16-2021 01:52 PM
Hey, everyone.
Just as an update, I still don't have a fix for this from our internal teams, but I did want to see if anybody here had seen any changes in their situation. If so, just let me know.
Thanks.

I started experiencing throttling to 80-90Mbps on a 200Mbps line between the 7th-9th of July 2023

Hey, everyone.
It's been a while since I've popped in, and I can see more reports being added into the mix. I'm still waiting to hear more, and I'm sorry for frustration this is causing everyone. I wish I knew more, but I'm keeping an eye on this and hoping to be able to provide more info soon.
Thanks.

Hi, everyone.
I'm finally able to come back with some news. We have a new firmware release that's starting to roll out to devices now. The update is aimed to provide a variety of improvements, including network reliability and consistency. There's nothing you will need to do in order to receive the update, it will download and install automatically. If you receive the update and don't notice any improvements, please let me know.
Thanks.
03-30-2022 11:51 AM
What version is the new firmware?
04-09-2022 03:07 PM
Didn't fix the issue for me, have the new firmware and still getting throttled to 90.

Hello ubiveatch,
Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry for this experience.
Please make sure that the Ethernet cable that you are using is not damaged and is securely plugged into both your modem and Google Wifi device. Perform a 2-minute power cycle on your entire network by following the steps below:
Keep me posted.
Best,
Lovely

My Google mesh router which is of course connected to the modem by ethernet has had this problem for some time. It shows Download 550mb but upload is just 90-100. Internet service is fiber running 950 both up and down at the modem.
03-24-2023 10:04 AM
Still having this issue in 2023. Gigabit internet service, wired or wireless throttling speeds down to 7-30mbps on all devices.
06-23-2023 06:29 AM
Same here. It either maintains 1Gb service for about 5 minutes & then throttles down to 100Mb at max OR it simply loses connection. I'm not going to keep paying for something I'm not getting. AT&T fiber is my next stop.
08-27-2023 07:17 PM
Issue here is WiFi is great and wired is throttled to 100Mbps. It’s driving me nuts!
08-28-2023 08:59 PM
Having the same issue too. Home app shows 700+ Mbps download, but wired and wireless devices connected to Google show ~120Mbps download.
09-15-2023 10:43 AM
Same here. Checked in on this in 2022, tried the fixes. Again earlier this year and still have it now in Sept 2023. In the end I have just given up and unplugged them vowing not to buy another product from them which seems a shame.
03-30-2022 02:06 PM
Hey, JGS.
The new firmware version is 14150.43.80. If you're not seeing that, you're still in line to receive the update.
Thanks.
04-09-2022 01:44 PM
Ever since receiving this update I'm having throttling issues
04-09-2022 02:43 PM
to expand, one of my pucks has the latest firmware and the other two don't, for the past week ive been dealing with slowed down speeds and disconnection issues with wifi, ethernet is totally fine, all pucks are wired.
04-15-2022 03:30 PM
Hi Jeff
We got the update yesterday, restarted the network and speeds are still 10% of what I'm paying for with my ISP. Obviously the problem still exists. What else can we do aside from buying a new router?
Thanks
04-15-2022 04:20 PM
Get a cat6 or cat5e ethernet cord, the one that comes with it is only cat5
04-15-2022 06:25 PM
I got cat5e already.
05-04-2022 11:29 AM
Hi Jeff, Is there another fix coming? I have 4x Google WiFi routers on 14150.43.80 but still reproducing this issue which is super annoying.
Running the Google Home app speed test temporarily fixes the issue like it did for a few others but speeds keep getting throttled to 100mbps shortly after so there hasn't been a good solution so far. Thank you
05-04-2022 11:43 AM
As the user "olavrb" suggested above, I tried disabling network priority traffic but it doesn't seem to have helped in my situation as I still hit the low network speeds just now. It would be great if we can get this resolved soon.
01-10-2024 12:32 AM
Same here. Are they trying to steer people to get 1gig or more plans. I hate this. Bragged about google fi in years past. Now I get constant dropped signals if not in same room as router. Even speed test on PC only manages 88 to 96 mps .
Shame on you Google. I've been a customer since day 1 my area.
11-21-2021 09:45 PM
I am experiencing this issue as well. If I run ethernet directly from the fiber port or directly from my wall to my computer, I get 800-900mbps both up and down (Google Fiber ISP), but when I run ethernet from the Google Wifi unit's LAN port to my computer, or Wifi itself, I seem to be limited to 100mbps.
11-28-2021 07:40 PM
I have a very similar issue. I restart the Google Wifi router and get expected speeds (I have Google Fiber and upgraded from their Fiber TV to the Google Wifi router) of ~900 Mbps up/down. A few hours later or sometimes a day later, speeds drop to ~90 Mbps up/down. I restart Google Wifi router and all is well again.
12-17-2021 07:15 AM
I wanted to post another update - have no idea if it will help or confuse the matter. Based upon all the discussion, I removed the Google Wifi as my ROUTER and replaced it with a Linksys EA9300 that I had been using as a basic AP (Bridge Mode). I then took one of my mesh Google Wifi devices and reset it and am using it now as an AP (put in Bridge Mode). Thinking this was an issue of the router functionality. I can tell you that it is the device itself, no matter whether acting as a ROUTER or Acting as a simple AP, the same thing happens. The good news is that any device connected through a WIRE going to the Linksys Router gets the expected ~900Mbs up/down. However any device connected wirelessly to the Google Wifi AP, get the drop down to ~90Mbs up/down. I rebooted the Google Wifi AP this morning and retested my wireless connect from my phone, sitting in the same spot (I went from 42up/35down to 453up/461down). This is absolutely ridiculous that Google can't figure this out, or they have and can't fix via firmware ( and they don't want to replace millions and millions of units).

So many messages and threads about this issue... but almost no tangible response from Google. I'm a software engineer myself and seeing the same exact thing. Troubleshooting shows a consistent, periodic throttling of speed (maybe down to 10%) for connections - occurring randomly in the evenings, lasting hours to days, then fixing instantly with a network restart. Troubleshot with multiple devices, at multiple stages, and even checked against an old Verizon router.
Sigh. Following this thread (and the others...)
01-20-2022 03:10 PM
Having the same issue. Any news on this other than buying a different router?
01-20-2022 05:27 PM - edited 01-20-2022 05:36 PM
Similar issue here. In the google home app, the internet speed shows ~300 Mbps, but the mesh point speed is capped at ~100 Mbps, which caps the speed of devices connected to the mesh point. FYI, I tested this with the main router and the mesh point placed right next to each other, so it is not because the mesh point does not have strong signal.
