Upgrading 1st Gen Wifi Mesh with 2nd Gen Puck

Hi, Ive just bought an extra puck to extend my mesh. This is all with Google Wifi (not Nest), and am on the Home app. I have a mesh of 3 1st Gen wifi pucks up and working already, but want to add a new 4th puck to help cover a poor quality zone.

The App identifies the new puck and I can scan the QR code to set up etc. Then it tries to set up but eventually fails telling me to move the puck closer to the main router. I have it now 10cm away, but it still wont work. Is there a known compatibility for adding new 2nd gen pucks to a mesh created with 1st gen ones? Are there some extra steps I need to take please?

Hi, yes all sorted now. New puck used as main router point and old gen routers as mesh points worked, even though I was mixing UK and Australia region pucks, so all good!

Hi, having spent a lot of time with the Google Support team yesterday, multiple reboots, removing app etc, we realised that the 1st gen pucks were from a different country to the new 2nd gen pucks. Im told this is probably the root cause in my case.

As a last resort, I have tried to use the 2nd gen puck as the main wifi point connected to the router (essentially recreating the wifi network/mesh from scratch) and then found that the 1st gen puck would connect as a standard wifi point. Fingers crossed this works for you.

Note: I also looked into seeing if you could flash the firmware of the pucks to update the country code to the same across all 1st Gen and 2nd Gen, but I dont know a way to do this)

Hey, dave-w.

Thanks for letting us know what worked for you. That's always a huge help for people searching for answers. The configured for another country issue pops up every once in a while in the secondhand market. As for the firmware, we aren't able to update that for a different region or country. Often times there are differences beyond software, such as power requirements or restrictions, that exist between countries and that's a big reason why those differences are in place.

Hey, wifiii.

Did you try dave-w's suggestion of swapping around the points to see if it helps? Even if they are all from the same region, sometimes swapping a main point does help. Give that a go and see if it works for you as well.

Thanks.

Thanks Jeff.

I've not had a chance to resolve this fully yet as I've been struck down with Covid. I think the solution should work for me, but should be able to work out one way or another in the next week.

Hi, dave-w. Sorry to hear about you getting sick with Covid! That's definitely the focus for right now. When you're feeling up to it, go ahead and give that a look, but take your time. Thanks for letting me know.

Hey, dave-w.

I know you've been sick, so no worries if you haven't had a chance, but I was curious if you had any opportunity to look more into this and to see if things were still where we left off on things. Hopefully things are working better now, but if you need more support, just let me know.

Thanks.

Ah, that's great, dave-w. Thanks for letting me know it worked out! I'm happy to hear all is working correctly. As we have our solution here, I'll go ahead and close up the thread, but if you need anything else at all, please feel free to start up a new discussion.

Thanks!
