Nest wifi point won't connect to mesh

largehead14

I factory reset my nest wifi router, and after it was set up I attempted to reconnect my nest wifi point. It says that it got connected, but then on the next step when it says "connecting to mesh" and "adding device to your network" it suddenly says "something went wrong" now it shows up in Google home under "Local Devices" instead of the room I told it to be in, and when I try to talk to it, it says "please log in to the Google home app". If I click on the nest wifi point badge under Local Devices, it tries to finish the setup, but fails at the same step. Things I've tried:

  • Factory resetting the nest wifi point, and router, multiple times
  • Uninstalling and reinstalling Google home app
  • Moving wifi point closer and further away and reattempted setup.

I'm not sure what is wrong, I would think a factory reset would fix it, but no such luck. Anyone ever run into this particular problem?

I'm having the exact same problem.  I just bought a used nest WiFi router and point.  The router is setup and working correctly but the point won't join the mesh network.

I was able to get my point connect to my mesh network by using my wife's iPhone and the Google home app for the iPhone to set it up.  Possibly just using another phone with my account would have worked.

It worked with my wife's iPhone and Google home app

I have the same issue, google support does not know how to fix it. I have two points that are now totally useless unless they find a fix.

Sorry to tell you this but this is a very well known issue with Google/ Nest routers that google is not admitting to. Take a look around these forums and you will see how big of an issue it really is. I have personally have owned 3 different mesh routers from Google and every one has had the same issue. I would not even try customer service as they are the most horrible support I have ever delt with. Unfortunately I am sad to tell you the only way to fix your issue is to purchase a new router that is not Google.

I've escalated this and two other similar threads, hopefully Google will look into it.

I added some questions and things to try in following reply:

I don't work for Google.

Thanks for the response, here are the answers to your questions, let me know what you think.

1. I don't have a VPN active

2. Device model is SM-N950U

3. Android version 9

4. Security patch version November 1, 2021

Fixed this by borrowing an iphone from a friend. Worked perfectly first time. No need to factory reset anything. The flow was different, it set up the mesh first then set up the internet connection. It's an issue with the version of Google home on Android.

Good to know, I don't have an iPhone handy, but I'll see if anyone I know has one. I might also try installing an older version of Google home and seeing if that works.

Let us know if an older version worked. I've tried it yesterday with an older version 2022 and 2021 version. But didn't worked.

This!!!

I managed to scoop up an ipad and it solved EVERYTHING. After spending the entire sunday factory resetting, uninstalling the Home app, deleting my home and just about every **bleep** thing I could think of. Amazing that nothing worked via Android. So friends, seek out an iphone and you're good to go.

For anyone who still have or had this issue. Google have fix the issue. The Google Nest Wifi Router can create a WiFi-mesh with the Google Nest WiFi Point.

The update is not for the Google Home app for Android, the Google Nest Wifi Point is updated.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the help, @olavrb.

We're aware of the issue. Our team is working on finding out more details about the bug and we've seen some users that are finally able to set up their access points. I'd like to check in if there are others who still encounter it. We'll wait for your reply.

Hey debslife08,

Some users are now able to set up using their android smartphones again. Could you try again now and check if the issue still persists on your end? Let us know if you encounter any specific messages during setup. We’ll wait for your update.

Best,
Abi

Yes! I just tried again and it set up correctly with no problems. The update fixed the problem so far as I can see. I didn't have to do anything special to make it work, just tried again and whatever they did to update it worked. I did start from a factory reset though, because when it failed to setup previously, I factory reset the wifi point and set it aside. So from a factory reset point, setup worked perfectly.

Here we talking about the Google Nest WiFi Points and it's like you are referring to a Google WiFi Mesh. The Google Nest WiFi Points doesn't have a port for cable.

The issue I was having was Google nest wifi point dropping
