Yale Lock fails to Auto Lock and has grinding noise

Turp

App reports failure to lock. Door actually appears to lock, but has a slight grinding noise when it finished the process. This occurs when the door is open even in order to test if the fit has shifted in the door frame. I have changed the batteries also even though no low battery was indicated.

I have a couple of these locks and one of them has gotten pretty noisy when locking. I was wondering if there was a way to oil or service it. But I'm guessing once it starts making that grinding noise something inside has failed.

It sounds like the battery is dying, or there is an internal issue with the lock. Have you tried to have it looked at?

I put in batteries just a few months ago. I put in batteries again the other day. It seems to be using them quickly now that it's having difficulty opening the lock.

I would like to know if there's any way to service the unit and or get parts. Yale told me that they will not do this. The only option is to purchase an entirely new unit, with the deadbolt, the remote receiver, everything. This seems very wasteful and not very helpful to your customer.

They said there was no way to do preventative maintenance and there was no way to get parts. If it dies a few days, weeks, months out of warranty, they want you to just buy an entirely new setup. That's a lot of e-waste.

The warranty says the electronics are good for 2 years or 3 years of someone else installs them. I can't imagine what anybody could do wrong to warrant a year less of coverage. But the hardware is supposed to be lifetime of install but they add a section that says that the motor or drive is part of the electronics warranty. What about the little plastic gears that failed after 2 years?

I am sure you can find parts online like ebay or something like that to replace the parts, but if it is out of warranty it would unfortunately not be something that can be replaced via warranty if it is out of warranty. I would check out your local area to see if there is someone who can fix it for you, or sell the parts. We do not sell parts for our devices I'm afraid.

Brad.

I will look for parts but if Yale/Nest will not sell them not sure how I'll get them.

The warranty should cover the product but it looks like they expect it to fail after a year or two.

I guess we really do need some right to repair laws. It's such a waste to just tell the end user to buy a new one after 2 years. I have 5 of these. 😞

Is there anywhere to at least get parts, third party or otherwise? Seems crazy wasteful to just throw the whole thing away.

No there is not. Not from Google anyway. You can try searching ebay or something like that.
