Same, received the following:

Untrusted device. Chromecast couldn't be verified. This could be caused by outdated device firmware.

Did a factory reset, now I'm getting:

We couldn't authenticate your Chromecast. Please visit support.google.com/chromecast for help troubleshooting this issue.

Device: Chromecast 2nd Generation

Region: UK

Firmware Version: Unknown

Mine is 3rd gen chromecast, from indonesia using android.

I have done factory reset multiple times, i reinstalled google home app to my 2 android phone. When i tried to add device, 1 phone giving signal and showing setup code but then showing error "we couldnt authenticate your chromecast" and other phone not showing signal and showing "we couldnt communicate"

Having the same problem from yesterday.

Tried factory reset, and no longer able to authenticate Chromecast. Tried making support ticket and system seems down, call back options all fail.

I'm having the exact same problem.  I was streaming TV then suddenly I couldn't cast anymore.  I tried several apps that I cast from and nothing.  So I did like you did, factory reset, deleted the device and tried to re-add and it says "authentication failed".

I am in Australia. Not sure of generation or how to find it.

Something interesting, before I performed a factory reset, the chromecast ambience was still on the screen, with the current temperature, but instead of displaying my home device, (debs_bedroom in my case) it was displaying Google. Could not access any streaming or audio services.

After performing a factory reset authentication failed. I then checked my router and the device debs_bedroom was still displaying in my router. So I rebooted my router and my phone (android) and the device was removed from the router but still an authentication error.

Another factory reset on chromecast and reinstall of Google home and adding device still had same authentication error message when trying to add to the network. Google home found the device but would not authenticate.

I suspect a software update of some kind has created this problem especially with the timing and as so many others are experiencing the same problems.

Looking forward to a solution!!!

I'm in the UK using a Chromecast device that is at least 10 years old, I don't know the number. Morning of March 9th it worked fine, yesterday evening and today says it's an untrusted device. I tried resolving it via Google Home to no avail. Unplugged and restarted my chromecast several times. Unplugged and restarted my wifi. Still not working. Thank you in advance for any info.

Also some more info if it helps: the chromecast shows up on my tv but my device (iphone) says it's an untrusted device/ firmware problem.

Me pasa lo mismo

Hi,

UK here.  Same problem as everyone.  It's connected on TV but unable to cast.

Cast firmware- 1.56.275994

Everyone asking how to find firmware info-

Go to Home > Devices > choose your chromecast name > Top right corner choose the settings icon (next to 3 dots) > Device information > scroll down to Technical information

Half of us have done a factory reset so our device isn't listed on our app anymore.

Same issue. Getting the authentication error when I am trying to setup the Chromecast after resetting the factory settings.

My chromecast is removed, can not even find it anymore, two of them!

Hi JillG,

Thank you for escalating this issue.

I am from New Jersey, USA.

I tried factory reset and restarting my router. But getting the same authentication error on my Google Home app. I am using an old Chromecast model NC2-6A5. How do I find the firmware version? Home is not showing any option to check this.

I'm from Argentina, I have the same problem. I own several gen2 devices.

Seems this is happening all over the world. Could my Chromecast device have expired? Worked fine last night. Don't know how to find the details on it to send you. Have unplugged, waited, reconnected, etc even factory reset. Chromecast shows up on my TV but Google home says it's offline, which it clearly is not. I think the problem is with Google home not the Chromecast device.  Tried customer support on the phone got cut off and they won't let me call again.  Can't believe how dependent I am on this product! If it doesn't work I would need to cancel all my streaming services...

Indeed. I'm in Lebanon. Chromecast 2 was working just fine a couple of hours ago. Then it stopped communicating with my phone. Tried to unplug, wait, factory reset. But I cannot reset because it cannot "authenticate". Obviously a problem that Google needs to resolve or at least provide feedback on!!

A tech product shouldn't expire! If this is planned obsolescence of the 2nd gen Cromecast then I'm not going out to buy a new one, I'm going to get a competitor's casting device. I don't WANT to do that, though, because I liked my trusty 2nd gen just fine until an hour ago, when I performed a factory reset like the rest of us to poor results. I'm hoping it's an issue with a Google Home app update that can be quickly resolved. Any communication at all from Google could have prevented me from forcing a reset. I feel like the new kid in school getting hazed by being encouraged to check out the pool on the roof.

Same problem here. Hope it’s an outage they are working to patch. I don’t have money to get a new device.
