Dear Nest Support Team,
I am deeply disappointed by Google’s decision to discontinue support for my Nest Learning Thermostat (1st/2nd gen). This device was marketed as a long-term smart home investment, and abruptly rendering core features obsolete-including app control and remote access-undermines trust in your products.
While I appreciate the $130 discount on the 4th-gen model, this does not fully offset the inconvenience of forced obsolescence. Many users, myself included, purchased these thermostats with the expectation of ongoing functionality. The sudden loss of smart features (despite hardware still functioning) feels like a deliberate push to monetize loyal customers.
Key concerns:
Lack of long-term support commitments at the time of purchase
No option for third-party app integration post-discontinuation
Environmental impact of discarding functional devices
I urge Google to reconsider this decision or extend the upgrade offer’s value. At minimum, provide concrete steps for users to retain basic smart functionality through alternative means. Or, Is there anything else you can offer me? Like a free upgrade and installation. It is no fault of mine that you are choosing to discontinue my service.
Sincerely,
Ruby Wilder

I wrote to @madebygoogle on X and submitted feedback here
I also filed a formal complaint with my state's Attorney General's office. It was an easy procedure that did not take much time as I used AI to generate the messages. I encourage everyone to do the same. Here is what I wrote to Google:
Dear @madebygoogle,
This message expresses disappointment and concern regarding the upcoming discontinuation of app control for 1st and 2nd generation Nest Learning Thermostats, effective October 25, 2025. This decision is considered a severe betrayal of the product's original value proposition and a violation of consumer expectations as a New York resident.
When the Nest Learning Thermostat was purchased, remote app control was a fundamental aspect of its "smart" functionality. This feature was a key differentiator and a primary reason for investing in the product. The device was marketed with the clear implication of long-term support for these core features. Removing this functionality renders the device a mere programmable thermostat, diminishing its value and failing to deliver on the original promise. This action appears to violate consumer protection laws in New York, including the implied warranty of merchantability, which dictates that goods should be fit for their ordinary purpose. The "ordinary purpose" of a Nest Learning Thermostat inherently includes its smart features and app control. Furthermore, this situation raises concerns under New York's General Business Law § 349, which prohibits deceptive business acts and practices. Marketing a "smart" thermostat with app control as a central feature, only to remove that functionality years later without adequate compensation, may constitute a deceptive practice.
While Google has offered discounts on newer models, this is an insufficient remedy for the loss of a core feature that was integral to the purchase decision. The user should not be compelled to purchase a new device simply to retain functionality that was initially provided.
Google is urged to reconsider this decision and provide a fair resolution that either restores the app functionality for existing 1st/2nd generation devices indefinitely or provides a complimentary upgrade to a newer model that maintains comparable features. For transparency and as a record of concerns, a formal complaint is also being filed with the New York State Attorney General's office. A prompt response and a satisfactory resolution to this issue are expected.

Keep me posted.

I have two Gen 2 thermostats, three Nest Protects (which I guess you don't make or sell anymore, so I don't know how much longer you'll provide support for those), 2 Nest x Yale Deadbolts, a Nest doorbell camera, a Nest camera with floodlight, and one other Nest camera. I have recommended these products to many people and have even purchased them as gifts. There are a ton of comments in this thread, but the only one Nest has responded to is the one who said they filed a complaint with their state AG's Office. As an attorney myself, I guess that's the smart thing to do, and I guess that's what we all should do. I'm very disappointed with how Google has handled this. Obviously I've invested a lot into these products, and I've touted them far and wide, only to have this happen.

I invested in 4 thermostats with the expectation they would function indefinitely. Google had me move to Google home and now is arbitrarily rendering them obsolete despite the fact they are perfectly able to work if the wifi connection could work just like other products. This is unethical. When searching for a new wifi enabled security system, I skipped the expensive Google product. I am glad I did since support for that is stopping. My niece was scammed when she purchased it. I will be joining the class action suit! Google should say in the search engine business but corporate greed lead it to take advantage of innocent consumers of good products. Just like the unethical corporate takeover entitiew that decimate good business for greed and enrichment of the few
Is that enough info for you?

You are a fake Google robot.

When I purchased my home, it already had one Nest Thermostat. I added a second thermostat, two Nest Yale deadbolts, three Nest Protect smoke and CO2 detectors, an outdoor camera with a floodlight, and a second camera. Everything was fine until Google purchased Nest. Now one of my locks won't connect, and after hours spent on the phone with Google, I gave up. I upgraded to Nest Aware from my perfectly great Nest app, and Nest Aware is awful, leaving big lapses in recording camera activity when I had NONE previously. I recommended these products to SO MANY PEOPLE, and now I regret that. They need to make this right for there long time customers.

I agree completely with the complaints about discontinuing Nest services. It also raises questions about the cameras I access with the same app. This will probably have me, as others have commented, not buy Nests in my next house. Now, I'm stuck as I'm planning on selling and need them to be supported. Adding insult to injury, you can only get 3 of them at the discounted price and I have 4. So aggravating!
07-11-2025 10:23 AM
When I called today about my thermostats, they told me they no longer make or sell Nest Protects (smoke/CO2 detectors). So it's just a matter of time before they brick these, also. I have two thermostats and three Nest Protects. I then called about the cameras and was told them still make and sell those (just a matter of time, I'd imagine). Didn't bother to ask about my Nest x Yale deabolt/cameras. Google took a perfectly great company and ruined it.
Thursday
Check Amazon. They sell Nest thermostats cheaper than the “discounted” option Google is offering. I don’t know what generation they are though; be careful not to buy a GEN 1/2 that are being made obsolete by Google even though theres nothing wrong with them.
07-11-2025 10:50 AM
I'll never buy a Nest product again after this BS

AI Overview claims there is no class action filed:
+15
In light of recent service changes and retirements for some Google Nest products, there have been discussions and concerns about the potential for class action lawsuits, although there is no currently certified class-action lawsuit specifically addressing the discontinuation of Nest services and devices.
Here's a summary of the situation:
Discontinued Nest services and devices
Nest Learning Thermostats (1st and 2nd gen): Support for these devices is ending on October 25, 2025. This means they will no longer connect to the Google Nest or Google Home app, and features like remote control and software updates will cease to function. Users will still be able to control the thermostat directly on the device.
Nest Secure: Support has already ended for Nest Secure. The system will no longer connect to cloud services, work with the Nest app, or receive software updates. Google is recommending users transition away from Nest Secure and has offered some users incentives to do so.
Nest Protect and Nest x Yale Lock (associated with Nest Secure): While Nest Protect continues to function and receive updates until its expiration date, its connection to the Nest Secure system and some features like emergency shutoff are affected by the discontinuation of Nest Secure. If users previously used Nest Guard as a bridge for the Nest x Yale Lock, they will need to switch to a Nest Connect to maintain Wi-Fi connectivity."

No problem many of us are getting the new thermostats from the electric companies free or at cost, I got the Honeywell for $4.95. Hopefully the government and attorneys will look into this with lawsuits and laws. As for myself I am going from anything Google to Apple starting with my android phone .
07-14-2025 08:45 AM
As of now there are no lawsuits we are working on the first one now and should be in process within a month.
07-20-2025 10:45 AM
This kind of reeks of Apple's slowing down the performance of the iphone forcing people to buy new iphones when a cheaper battery replacement would have done the trick.
07-20-2025 01:50 PM
That's a great analogy. Apple had to pay for years of litigation and half a billion dollars for that fiasco.
07-13-2025 07:57 PM
Anybody find an alternative thru SCE? Southern California Edison?
I guess if you write code you are numb to customer service, marketing and sales. I used to call it leadership in charge of sales prevention. Google leadership. You nailed it.
07-16-2025 12:15 PM
Time and again, Google proves it's an unreliable company—its products and infrastructure included. It's long past time we stop supporting this never-ending summer intern project and move to a better tech platform. The sooner we switch, the sooner we cut our losses. This will never change. Google has no backbone and no respect for its users.
07-16-2025 01:54 PM
So we are forced to upgrade, leaving us with fully functioning older units that we can do nothing with am now they are raising the annual subscription for Nest Aware (for anyone with cameras) an additional $50/year!! So spend a bunch of money for new thermostats and have an increase on your existing service as well…. Real nice….
07-18-2025 09:31 AM
You guys totally suck for discontinuing support! Thermostats are infrastructure, not something you replace every 2 yrs like an iPhone. I will NOT be upgrading to a new Nest--which you may merrily discontinue support for in the future. What I WILL be doing is replacing my Nests with Honeywell Z-Wave therms running through open-source Home Assistant app. Then no stupid corporation can discontinue my support--open standards, baby!
07-18-2025 09:35 AM
Just got mine, Honeywell from my electric company $4.95 . Will be dumping my Nest this weekend LOL.....Want my old one it comes with no support LOL.
07-19-2025 11:46 AM
🤣😂
07-20-2025 08:22 AM
Google really did a number on us this time. Forced us to upgrade our two Gen2 thermostats to Gen4 with a discounted code (still not cheap, $160 a piece with tax). Fine, I played ball.
I Have two other Nest thermostats, but they are Gen3. Guess what? Google home app cannot set the schedule for Gen3 Nest thermostats. Go figure. Now we have to switch between the two apps. I asked Google customer support if I could get a promo code the remaining two Gen3 ones to upgrade to Gen4 and his answer was he was a lowly customer agent and cannot do this.
Thank you Google. Will NEVER ever buy hardware product from you EVER! Learned our lesson.
07-20-2025 10:38 AM
I am going with Honeywell or Ecobee replacements for all of my Nest thermostats. My electric supplier has some super good discounts/deals on both of them.
Not playing Google's game anymore in the future. Done with them! Will never purchase a Google product again!
07-20-2025 10:47 AM
Got the Honeywell Home unit from my electric company $4.95 ........works with Alexa .....
07-20-2025 01:53 PM
Wow. That's AWFUL customer service. I'd be even angrier than I already am!
07-22-2025 06:32 PM
I am also upset and I would like a refund. This is a terrible inconvenience and a blatant money grab.
08-12-2025 04:13 AM
I want to thank you for taking our nest app away. I bought mine when I had a job and now I’m disabled and when I replaced it guess what it’s not gonna be with anything Google or nest you can go screw yourself. You’re a bunch of greedy bastards
08-19-2025 08:48 PM
I will not be buying anymore Google products. I have an iPhone/ipad/Apple Watch anyway so I’ve decided to go with anything I can use with HomeKit to replace my smoke detectors and thermostats. This is highly upsetting to me that they are forcing you to get new thermostats that are perfectly fine. Furthermore they also discontinued the nest protect which had already pissed me off now this was the last straw. Goodbye google.
09-02-2025 07:56 AM
I knew they stopped manufacturing the Nest Protects, but I never received anything about it. I have three. All were purchase through Google at the same time and were installed at the same time. One expires in 2027 and the other two in 2031. Can't figure that out. I just learned they're discontinuing the Nest/Yale Deadbolt. I have two of those, three protects, two thermostats, one doorbell, and two cameras (including a floodlight). I will never buy another Google product after this. I recommended these in several groups I'm in and got people to buy the entire line. I also purchased some as gifts. What a joke.
08-22-2025 10:01 PM
Ditto
08-24-2025 08:07 AM
If this doesn't result in a class action lawsuit, an avalanche of letters to lawmakers, and complete boycott of Google, American consumers have totally lost their will to stand up for themselves and will roll over for anything.
08-28-2025 12:46 PM
This stinks. I bought this product from the original company. The main reason I purchased this expensive item was I needed remote access. Now I am being held hostage for $150. This does not seem legal. There was no mention of discontinuation of remote access on the company’s end at the time of purchase. My remote still works perfect. Corporate greed.
I'm looking at a Honeywell next.
08-28-2025 02:07 PM
They are no longer making the Nest Protect (CO2/Smoke) detector as well. Crazy!
08-28-2025 02:14 PM
Any of you guys looking at the First Alert SC5 CO2/Smoke detector as a replacement for the Nest Protect? Apparently, Google has this product endorsed as a replacement for the Protect. Obviously, It looks like a knockoff Protect and does not have a nightlight. It seems to only be compatible with Google Assistant too and costs $150 per unit. I also looked at the First Alert Safe and Sound. This one is not usable by me since it only comes in hardwired form. Also, it costs a whopping $350. Not doing that one for sure.
09-02-2025 08:10 AM
Absolutely will not be looking at it. It's Google/First Alert. I won't be buying anything Google-related in the future. They've also stopped producing the Nest/Yale Deadbolt. The replacement will work in a different ecosystem. Of my ten Nest products, I think only two cameras and the doorbell haven't been discontinued, and I'm not actually even sure if that's true.
08-28-2025 02:16 PM
For Themostat replacement, I'm looking at the Ecobee Pro and switing over to Alexa. Any thoughts on that device?
08-28-2025 07:05 PM
I got a Honeywell from amazon through my electric company for only $19.99 operates and does the same thing as a Nest...
08-29-2025 04:44 AM
What model Honeywell? I don't want the electric company controlling my furnace/AC so will buy it outright.
