Dear Nest Support Team,
I am deeply disappointed by Google’s decision to discontinue support for my Nest Learning Thermostat (1st/2nd gen). This device was marketed as a long-term smart home investment, and abruptly rendering core features obsolete-including app control and remote access-undermines trust in your products.
While I appreciate the $130 discount on the 4th-gen model, this does not fully offset the inconvenience of forced obsolescence. Many users, myself included, purchased these thermostats with the expectation of ongoing functionality. The sudden loss of smart features (despite hardware still functioning) feels like a deliberate push to monetize loyal customers.
Key concerns:
Lack of long-term support commitments at the time of purchase
No option for third-party app integration post-discontinuation
Environmental impact of discarding functional devices
I urge Google to reconsider this decision or extend the upgrade offer’s value. At minimum, provide concrete steps for users to retain basic smart functionality through alternative means. Or, Is there anything else you can offer me? Like a free upgrade and installation. It is no fault of mine that you are choosing to discontinue my service.
Sincerely,
Ruby Wilder

So say you buy a car and it serves you well. But one day you get an email from The manufacturer telling you that at a date in the not too distant future the car will stop making left turns - but here is a discount on a new car. Would that even be legal? I don’t think so and I see no reason why this bozostat event would be any different. So what now? Will you be joining the inevitable class action suit that will be coming soon? And don’t you think that Google hasn’t already factored the cost of one into their plans? And what about the cost to Google of lost customers that realize that purchasing anything else from them (including a cellphone) would render you vulnerable to the whims of the marketing guys? I can’t wait to get the email that tells me that the phone can no longer send texts - but here’s a discount on a new one! The idea really blurs the line between buying and leasing, doesn’t it? I’ll leave you with a final comment: don’t do business with people that don’t play fair. And definitely don’t with those that do evil things

My works perfectly so why are you discontinuing it. I have all nest products, doorbell. Smoke alarm etc. I'm now thinking all my devices that all work perfectly will end up in the bin. This is disgusting. Especially the thermostat that cannot be easily replaced without the need for an electrician at extra cost. Shame on you google.

Google should stick to search engines and stay out of the hardware game. I too will be replacing all my Google hardware with ecobee products and will finally be able to cancel my Nest camera subscription. Thanks Google for helping me to finally realize how stupid I have been.

Agree with everyone else, is super annoying but no choice. Ordered 2 then realized I actually need 3 but the discount won’t work again for my order. No idea what to do and don’t want to pay full price!

I am going to remove my second generation nest thermostat which I have two of them and replace them with an ecobee model. I will never buy another nest thermostat product again because of this lack of support on Google’s behalf

I have 4 of these Nest products (2 in 2 homes) and purchased them primarily for energy efficiency and the ability to control them remotely. The discontinuance of these products is as many stated, merely a way to monetize the products. When looking for a security system, I learned that Nest was discontinuing it. I was glad to know that so I purchased a cheaper system that works perfectly. Given Google's Nest track record, I will not be expending hundreds of dollars to merely replace perfectly working thermostats. There are cheaper options available. I will not be purchasing more Google products as they are merely a tech company not interested in anything else but making money. Its reputation is going down the tubes!
I am not sure there is any government agency or consumer protection agency that could require Google to keep at least the wifi ability going. There are few wifi products that the wifi abilty depends on the decision of the company to stop supporting the app. But I am not a techy.
If anyone knows any comparable products, plese let us know. Maybe as the deadline appraoches, the news media will give us some options. Even with the measly discount I would have to expend $600+ dollars if I install myself - which I can't and don't want to.

Items like the NEST Thermostat do NOT NEED updates or NEW "features". We are HAPPY with the Thermostat that we bought.
We wanted REMOTE access.
We use Nest Thermostats in remote places.
If your newest generation thermostat has features that we feel we need, then we will pay the upgrade price.
If there are not enough features "that we cannot live without" then we expect that our thermostat will continue to function AS PURCHASED.
------------------
I understand that the people at Google may not actually USE a Nest Thermostat to control home climate controls remotely.
Imagine that your Google employee badges "will still work" but only allow you to EXIT a building unless you upgrade to the NEW $300 employee badges (that will work until the next upgrade comes out).
Your badges could EASILY continue working but if someone cared enough to make the arrangements....
well .....
Just cough up the $300, what's your problem? You know that Google needs your money more than YOU do.
------------------------
We paid a price that was 4x the price of the competition for the remote capabilities. We also expected our thermostat to have an expected lifetime to be like EVERY OTHER Thermostat: For the life of the house or until the next major remodel (usually when a new owner moves in).
If Google does not want to maintain the connection for REMOTE ACCESS (which is WHY we bought the unit) then Google should send out an UPDATE to allow connecting to the SMART HOME system.
This is an embarrassment and I hope that the eventual class action lawsuit gets a LOT OF PRESS.
I have been using Pixel and Nexus phones for many years, but after this LATEST of many shafting from Google, I will be seriously evaluating whether I should ever trust Google hardware again.
I will have to toss my "still functional" NEST Thermostat into the pile of Google Hardware in my garage that Google of ("don't be evil" fame) has decided to disable way before I would typically replace hardware of this type. Google TV, Google HOME router, Google speakers of any type, Google Chromecast Audio (the greatest addition to Audio ever), various versions of Google Chromecast Video... (to
be continued)

This behavior is outright wrong. These products were purchased in good fath that they would continue working with remote services. This was why we switched from non remote devices ro your device. This is the preverbial and premeditated bait and switch. We will be writing Congess and if this remains unresolved we will be divesting ourselves from your products and services.

I fully agree with this assessment. It’s a disgrace that Google has unilaterally forced the obsolescence of Nest thornistats well within the working lifespan of the product. In doing so I believe Google has breached trust but also misrepresented and misdescribed their products and product features for which customers should be financially compensated.
05-22-2025 05:36 AM
Whoever said the life of a thermostat is 5 to 7 years? I have a 30-year-old Honetwell that works just fine (albeit not wifi). I'm not only disappointed in this discontinuation decision, but why should I buy a Nest Gen 4 just to have it discontinued in 5 to 7 years? Honeywell, here I come.

Screw Google and their discount! I have two perfectly good working Nest thermostats that I will be replacing with a different brand like Ecobee or Honeywell. I hope a class action lawsuit forces Google to drop this ludicrous screwing of Nest customers before the deadline date. I will never buy any Google product ever!

I am writing to follow up on my previous message about Google’s decision to discontinue support for the Nest learning thermostat (first and 2nd). I am very upset by this decision, which made my thermostat obsolete even though they still worked perfectly.
I was so disappointed that I could not in good conscience pay Google more money to upgrade a product that should’ve continued to work. Instead, I bought five ECOBEE THERMOSTAT for my three homes and swapped them out myself. I am not very handy, but the process was easy.
I made this decision because I felt forced by Google‘s lack of long-term support and the sudden removal of features that I relied on. The $130 discount on a newer nest model did not make up for the inconvenience or loss of trust. I hope Google will reconsider how it treats loyal customers in the future.
Farewell Google.

To people reading this, could you please add links to this thread from other forums (Amazon reviews, Redit)?
06-16-2025 09:06 AM
I concur with what Ruby stated! I just want Google/Nest to know that I will replace every Nest product with another brand and will try not to support Google in any way! This is disgusting to have more than a $1000 worth of thermostats just abandon by Google with hardly any effort to satisfy the customer. I believe that this is a sign of the future dealings with Google.

This is what I posted on social media when I first heard about Google cutting the Nest Thermostats loose.
I have been purchasing Google branded hardware and services for many years.
Their software and services are very good. If you need technical support, it does't exist. So luckily it is pretty good.
Two RULES
1). No one should EVER use Google Services for mission critical business needs because when you find a BUG, well, they simply don't care, and you will probably switch to another system before the fix it.
2). Don't EVER buy hardware from Google (this is written on a Pixel 9pXL).
I have had MANY products that I have purchased from Google that are still compatible, fast enough, do a great job, and Google justs TURNS THEM OFF.
As consumers, we should have a reasonable expectation that if the hardware requires an internet connection to "phone home" to operate, that as LONG AS THAT COMPANY IS STILL IN BUSINESS, or the company that PURCHASED the company is still in business, that the "phone home" destination would be maintained.
The Nest Thermostats that millions of people have installed in their homes as of April 2025 can count on losing all of the "SMART FEATURES" in the near future.
That's right, your VERY expensive Smart Thermostat is going to be lobotomized so that it functions identically to the $19.99 dumb thermostat that your wife wanted you to buy instead (that will work forever).
Google has "graciously" offered a coupon to existing customers to slightly lower the very high price of the NEW model that they are being kind enough to allow to work (for a while).
Another option is to pull your perfectly functioning thermostat off the wall, and resist mailing it to Google (because they don't care), install ANY OTHER BRAND of thermostat that allows remote operation, and toss your NEST in the box where you keep your Google Modem/Home, 6x Chromecast Audio units, Each generation of Google TV dongle that gets bricked (remember when the Google TV service was $45 and would "only go down as more subscribers joined"?).
I plead with you, DO NOT BUY GOOGLE HARDWARE. Google has NO SOUL and they assume that everyone is rich and won't mind replacing hardware 'just because goohle is bored with it".
I'm angry. This press release from Google Nest has pushed me right over the edge.
But don't worry, Google doesn't care.

If I do switch it won't be to another google product since they abandon support

agreed on all of the points made. What an embarrassment and money grab by Google. I have four of these thermometers in one home and they have rendered all obsolete. To make matters worse they offer a discount on only three replacements. A more equitable offer should be forthcoming from Google. Let’s be serious. Ridiculous.
Yep I agree. Done with google. Designed obsolescence to force people to pay for a newer device. I wish a lawyer would file a class action lawsuit.

Hang in there Ruby, we are looking over the original contracts and setting up for a Class Action.

So for grins I checked with ChatGPT and got the names of the two mentioned above. While checking those prices it took me to Amazon where Amazon has a smart thermostat with phone control for $50. It appears similar. You control it thru Alexa’s echo.

Google can go pound sand! My replacement thermostats certainly WON'T be a Google product!
They have cheated us all.....

I like many folks here also feel completely disrespected by Google and this decision to take my two perfectly good thermostats and turn them into paperweights!! After 25 years of great service I just replaced my Rheem HVAC units with Lennox. Even though I told them that I was happy with my Nest, I was still offered two new Internet/APP thermostats by the Dealer…so happy I took them and stored them because it will be a cold day in hell before I invest in ANYTHING Google! Nothing but a bunch of thieves!!!

I bought the device for its remote functionality. Nowhere on the packaging did it say that it would be made obsolescent in 10 years or that core functionality would be removed. This is not a cheap device - is it even legal to do this?
definitely a terrible experience. Something I hope google reconsiders. I’ve lost confidence in google in buying another expensive thermostat.

Go to your power provider that's what I did and got a Honeywell for $4.95.
Going to ask if I can use the $130 towards the purchase of an EcoBee. They’re leaving me without a functioning thermostat and aren’t providing a guarantee as to when they’ll pull the plug on Gen4, so i think it’s a reasonable request.

I have Cleco Power they offer Honeywell for $4.95 check with your power provider.

This is frustrating and disappointing. And if I have to choose to replace my thermostat because they no longer want to service it, I will not be replacing it with one of their products. I was very purposeful in not integrating all of my smart devices to Google and this proves that it was the right decision. I would urge Google if that they want to keep current customers, and want us to be advocates for new customers they would change their minds. Otherwise I will ensure my entire network understands that they should choose any brand other than Google.

I wrote to @madebygoogle on X and submitted feedback here
I also filed a formal complaint with my state's Attorney General's office. It was an easy procedure that did not take much time as I used AI to generate the messages. I encourage everyone to do the same. Here is what I wrote to Google:
Dear @madebygoogle,
This message expresses disappointment and concern regarding the upcoming discontinuation of app control for 1st and 2nd generation Nest Learning Thermostats, effective October 25, 2025. This decision is considered a severe betrayal of the product's original value proposition and a violation of consumer expectations as a New York resident.
When the Nest Learning Thermostat was purchased, remote app control was a fundamental aspect of its "smart" functionality. This feature was a key differentiator and a primary reason for investing in the product. The device was marketed with the clear implication of long-term support for these core features. Removing this functionality renders the device a mere programmable thermostat, diminishing its value and failing to deliver on the original promise. This action appears to violate consumer protection laws in New York, including the implied warranty of merchantability, which dictates that goods should be fit for their ordinary purpose. The "ordinary purpose" of a Nest Learning Thermostat inherently includes its smart features and app control. Furthermore, this situation raises concerns under New York's General Business Law § 349, which prohibits deceptive business acts and practices. Marketing a "smart" thermostat with app control as a central feature, only to remove that functionality years later without adequate compensation, may constitute a deceptive practice.
While Google has offered discounts on newer models, this is an insufficient remedy for the loss of a core feature that was integral to the purchase decision. The user should not be compelled to purchase a new device simply to retain functionality that was initially provided.
Google is urged to reconsider this decision and provide a fair resolution that either restores the app functionality for existing 1st/2nd generation devices indefinitely or provides a complimentary upgrade to a newer model that maintains comparable features. For transparency and as a record of concerns, a formal complaint is also being filed with the New York State Attorney General's office. A prompt response and a satisfactory resolution to this issue are expected.

Hi @iap,
Thanks for reaching out to the community! We completely understand your concerns and disappointment regarding the upcoming discontinuation of your Nest Learning Thermostat (1st or 2nd gen) on October 25, 2025. We know the smart features, including remote app control, were a core reason for your initial purchase, and we recognize how inconvenient it is to need a new product to keep features you already had.
The team would like to learn more about this situation. When you get a chance, please fill out this form and let us know when you’re finished. We’ll have someone reach out to you via email from there.
Keep me posted.

I have two Gen 2 thermostats, three Nest Protects (which I guess you don't make or sell anymore, so I don't know how much longer you'll provide support for those), 2 Nest x Yale Deadbolts, a Nest doorbell camera, a Nest camera with floodlight, and one other Nest camera. I have recommended these products to many people and have even purchased them as gifts. There are a ton of comments in this thread, but the only one Nest has responded to is the one who said they filed a complaint with their state AG's Office. As an attorney myself, I guess that's the smart thing to do, and I guess that's what we all should do. I'm very disappointed with how Google has handled this. Obviously I've invested a lot into these products, and I've touted them far and wide, only to have this happen.
I invested in 4 thermostats with the expectation they would function indefinitely. Google had me move to Google home and now is arbitrarily rendering them obsolete despite the fact they are perfectly able to work if the wifi connection could work just like other products. This is unethical. When searching for a new wifi enabled security system, I skipped the expensive Google product. I am glad I did since support for that is stopping. My niece was scammed when she purchased it. I will be joining the class action suit! Google should say in the search engine business but corporate greed lead it to take advantage of innocent consumers of good products. Just like the unethical corporate takeover entitiew that decimate good business for greed and enrichment of the few
Is that enough info for you?

When I purchased my home, it already had one Nest Thermostat. I added a second thermostat, two Nest Yale deadbolts, three Nest Protect smoke and CO2 detectors, an outdoor camera with a floodlight, and a second camera. Everything was fine until Google purchased Nest. Now one of my locks won't connect, and after hours spent on the phone with Google, I gave up. I upgraded to Nest Aware from my perfectly great Nest app, and Nest Aware is awful, leaving big lapses in recording camera activity when I had NONE previously. I recommended these products to SO MANY PEOPLE, and now I regret that. They need to make this right for there long time customers.
