Discontinued support for my Nest thermostat! Very Upsetting.

Dear Nest Support Team,

I am deeply disappointed by Google’s decision to discontinue support for my Nest Learning Thermostat (1st/2nd gen). This device was marketed as a long-term smart home investment, and abruptly rendering core features obsolete-including app control and remote access-undermines trust in your products.

While I appreciate the $130 discount on the 4th-gen model, this does not fully offset the inconvenience of forced obsolescence. Many users, myself included, purchased these thermostats with the expectation of ongoing functionality. The sudden loss of smart features (despite hardware still functioning) feels like a deliberate push to monetize loyal customers.

Key concerns:

  • Lack of long-term support commitments at the time of purchase

  • No option for third-party app integration post-discontinuation

  • Environmental impact of discarding functional devices

I urge Google to reconsider this decision or extend the upgrade offer’s value. At minimum, provide concrete steps for users to retain basic smart functionality through alternative means. Or, Is there anything else you can offer me?  Like a free upgrade and installation. It is no fault of mine that you are choosing to discontinue my service.

Sincerely,
Ruby Wilder

I agree completely with the complaints about discontinuing Nest services.  It also raises questions about the cameras I access with the same app.  This will probably have me, as others have commented, not buy Nests in my next house.  Now, I'm stuck as I'm planning on selling and need them to be supported.  Adding insult to injury, you can only get 3 of them at the discounted price and I have 4.  So aggravating!

When I called today about my thermostats, they told me they no longer make or sell Nest Protects (smoke/CO2 detectors). So it's just a matter of time before they brick these, also. I have two thermostats and three Nest Protects. I then called about the cameras and was told them still make and sell those (just a matter of time, I'd imagine). Didn't bother to ask about my Nest x Yale deabolt/cameras. Google took a perfectly great company and ruined it.

AI Overview claims there is no class action filed:

+15
In light of recent service changes and retirements for some Google Nest products, there have been discussions and concerns about the potential for class action lawsuits, although there is no currently certified class-action lawsuit specifically addressing the discontinuation of Nest services and devices.
Here's a summary of the situation:
Discontinued Nest services and devices
Nest Learning Thermostats (1st and 2nd gen): Support for these devices is ending on October 25, 2025. This means they will no longer connect to the Google Nest or Google Home app, and features like remote control and software updates will cease to function. Users will still be able to control the thermostat directly on the device.
Nest Secure: Support has already ended for Nest Secure. The system will no longer connect to cloud services, work with the Nest app, or receive software updates. Google is recommending users transition away from Nest Secure and has offered some users incentives to do so.
Nest Protect and Nest x Yale Lock (associated with Nest Secure): While Nest Protect continues to function and receive updates until its expiration date, its connection to the Nest Secure system and some features like emergency shutoff are affected by the discontinuation of Nest Secure. If users previously used Nest Guard as a bridge for the Nest x Yale Lock, they will need to switch to a Nest Connect to maintain Wi-Fi connectivity."

No problem many of us are getting the new thermostats from the electric companies free or at cost, I got the Honeywell for $4.95. Hopefully the government and attorneys will look into this with lawsuits and laws. As for myself I am going from anything Google to Apple starting with my android phone .

As of now there are no lawsuits we are working on the first one now and should be in process within a month.

This kind of reeks of Apple's slowing down the performance of the iphone forcing people to buy new iphones when a  cheaper battery replacement would have done the trick.

That's a great analogy. Apple had to pay for years of litigation and half a billion dollars for that fiasco.

Anybody find an alternative thru SCE?   Southern California Edison?

I guess if you write code you are numb to customer service, marketing and sales.  I used to call it leadership in charge of sales prevention.  Google leadership.  You nailed it.

Time and again, Google proves it's an unreliable company—its products and infrastructure included. It's long past time we stop supporting this never-ending summer intern project and move to a better tech platform. The sooner we switch, the sooner we cut our losses. This will never change. Google has no backbone and no respect for its users.

So we are forced to upgrade, leaving us with fully functioning older units that we can do nothing with am now they are raising the annual subscription for Nest Aware (for anyone with cameras) an additional $50/year!! So spend a bunch of money for new thermostats and have an increase on your existing service as well…. Real nice….

You guys totally suck for discontinuing support! Thermostats are infrastructure, not something you replace every 2 yrs like an iPhone. I will NOT be upgrading to a new Nest--which you may merrily discontinue support for in the future. What I WILL be doing is replacing my Nests with Honeywell Z-Wave therms running through open-source Home Assistant app. Then no stupid corporation can discontinue my support--open standards, baby!

Google really did a number on us this time.   Forced us to upgrade our two Gen2 thermostats to Gen4 with a discounted code (still not cheap, $160 a piece with tax).   Fine, I played ball.

I Have two other Nest thermostats, but they are Gen3.  Guess what?   Google home app cannot set the schedule for Gen3 Nest thermostats.  Go figure.  Now we have to switch between the two apps.  I asked Google customer support if I could get a promo code the remaining two Gen3 ones to upgrade to Gen4 and his answer was he was a lowly customer agent and cannot do this.

Thank you Google.  Will NEVER ever buy hardware product from you EVER!  Learned our lesson.

I am going with Honeywell or Ecobee replacements for all of my Nest thermostats.  My electric supplier has some super good discounts/deals on both of them.
Not playing Google's game anymore in the future.  Done with them!  Will never purchase a Google product again!

I am also upset and I would like a refund. This is a terrible inconvenience and a blatant money grab.
