Update: Great news! We're rolling out Matter compatibility for our newest Nest Thermostat released in 2020. This means you can now adjust the temp and change your thermostat's mode with multiple Matter-certified smart home platforms and apps.

If your Nest Thermostat hasn't received this update just yet, don't worry --- Matter compatibility will be rolling out to Nest Thermostat over the next few weeks, starting April 18.

Hey Google Nest Community,

Back in October, we announced that Matter is coming soon, and we have a very exciting update to share with you! Matter is now available for Google Home on your Nest and Android devices just in time for the holidays.

Here at Google, we want to make the home more helpful for everyone. That’s why with Matter enablement, we’re making it easier for you to set up devices and providing you with more choices on how you want your home to interoperate. Keep reading to get all the details you need to know about Matter and how it works with Google Home.

Google Devices with Matter

If you’re not familiar with Matter yet, let us give you the quick TL;DR: With Matter, you now can further customize your smart home to work with even more smart home devices and multiple ecosystems, so you can control your devices however you choose. Take a closer look at how Matter can help you make more connections with Google products and your favorite brands in our Keyword blog: Make connections that Matter in Google Home

We’ve updated many Google speakers, displays, and Wi-Fi routers with Matter, meaning they can work as a hub for Matter-enabled devices both locally and remotely with your Google Home app. That means you’ll soon be able to choose from hundreds of compatible products from your favorite brands and easily connect them to your smart home.

With Android Fast Pair for Matter, it’s easy to set up a new Matter device in just a few taps. You can share devices with other platforms and apps just as easily as sharing photos, and we’ll continue to work to make those smart home setup experiences even easier.

Matter's Multi-Admin feature simplifies cross-platform control

Matter's built-in Multi-Admin feature is what simplifies cross-platform control, making it easy for you to connect your devices to multiple ecosystems and apps at once. Google and Samsung have also been working together to make sharing devices between ecosystems more intuitive and seamless for you.

Soon, when setting up your Google Home app, you'll be made aware of Matter devices that have been set up with the SmartThings App on your Android OS phone, and you will be given a choice to easily onboard those devices to Google Home, and vice-versa. This means that you won’t have to manually add each of your devices one at a time or worry about which ecosystem your device has been set up on first.

Google Home support for Matter

If you want to control your Matter device with Google Home, you’ll need a Google Home or Nest device that can work as a hub for Matter. These devices include:

  • The original Google Home speaker
  • Google Home Mini
  • Nest Mini
  • Nest Audio
  • Nest Hub (1st and 2nd gen)
  • Nest Hub Max
  • Nest Wifi Pro

Matter-enabled devices can connect to your home network over Wi-Fi or Thread — a networking technology that’s helpful when you need a low power connection, like when connecting smart locks on your front door. We’ve also updated the following devices to work as Thread border routers, so you can connect Thread devices to your network too:

  • Nest Hub (2nd gen)
  • Nest Hub Max
  • Nest Wifi Pro

We’re working to bring Matter to as many Google Home surfaces as possible, and we'll be enabling more Nest devices, like Nest Thermostat, in 2023.

@RyanBabcock The best way to get support with that is to contact Google Nest support directly.

  1. Go to https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp
  2. Choose Nest Aware
  3. Type a short summary of the issue and click Next
  4. Click Payment or billing issue, then click Next step
  5. Click Next step, then click Next step
  6. Choose to get a call, call the team, or start a chat (options may vary by region/language).

When will all existing Nest Cameras be updated to be Matter-enabled?

Just out of curiosity, it seems that all the first gen Google Home devices have been added. Is there any reason why the Max is forgotten (hardware? Non compatible chip? Low sales?)

I expected the flagship to receive the upgrade at the same time then the Mini...

What about the Nest Wifi? Back in May you guys mentioned the Nest Wifi would act as a a Matter Controller and thread border router as well

Venture

I have a question, as I have some confusion about Matter vs Thread.

Is a Matter Border Router a Thread Border Router as well?

Is it safe to assume that a Matter Border Router is a Thread Border Router, but a Thread Border Router is not always a Matter Border Router?

Has anyone successfully added Matter devices to Google Home yet? I don't see any area within home or within my Nest Wifi Pro's settings to connect or control any Matter devices, nor to activate the Thread border router feature.

Concerned about the lack of Google Home Max on that list of devices being upgraded.

Hopefully it is on the list for future updates.

What about the Nest Yale Lock.  It is still being sold on the Google store but I have seen no indication that they plan to update with matter support nor have they even added it to the Nest SDM.  Lots of Google's iot devices seem to just have support dropped.

Hopefully the Nest Learning Thermostat gets updated as well and not just the new Nest Thermostat.

Hm, i had the play services matter module during the developer preview phase on my android device.. But now it´s gone and does not want to install / the API to force install it no longer exists..

Is the rollout still happening or how to i force install the matter module? I already tried re-installing play-services as well as google home / wiping the data of these apps.

Edit: Manual installation by requesting it from the Play Services module installer worked 😉

Will Nest Protect ever have Matter support? I am hoping I will be able to integrate my Nest Protects into Home Assistant using Matter given it doesn't appear Google cares to support them in the SDM API (GRRRR!!!). I've been waiting for SDM support for the Protect smoke alarms ever since I mistakenly migrated my Nest Account to Google (when it was first announced) but I have lost hope. I am hoping that maybe Google may consider supporting them in Matter which would hopefully provide an easy way to integrate them back into Home Assistant

Spacefish

@RandomUserName  guess they will support it, at least it should be easily possible via an firmware update.
They don´t support smoke alarms in their matter implementation as of now, so it would probably take some time (months)

@Leticia
Can we get an update on https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Blog/Heads-Up-Device-Activation/ba-p/176077 ?
It's been over 6 months since this blog admitted there was an issue.

@JPBark As of now, Matter only supports motion blinds, occupancy sensors, weather devices, smart plugs, door locks, lighting, and gateways. They plan on adding camera support in a later update.

@Spacefish

Where does this confidence come from. It would have been easy for them to add SDM support for the nest lock, and the nest protects but it still hasn't happened.  Not going to hold my breath.

The Nest Learning thermostat is still for sale yet it is not currently slated for Matter support. Is Google working on this?

Good morning, just wondering will matter allow use of the devices say when household internet goes down?

hfletcher

Be skeptical. Standards are wonderful and we all benefit BUT remember G promised the Home+Nest web integration EARLY 2022 and still only in Preview. I stopped buying hardware until G proves their roadmap. This stuff is hard and "early 2023" sounds suspicious. I do expect much legacy hardware to be marooned.

Also, don't expect too much from early releases of Matter compatible devices. Its going to take time.

GOOGLE HOME MAX SPEAKERS MISSING FROM UPGRADE

Great that you are updating the original Mini and Home smart speakers, but there's no mention of the big  Google Home Max smart speaker. I have quite a few of these, and they were expensive.

I'd be incredibly grateful if you would update the software for these too? They are a great smart speaker - shame you don't make anything similar now.

Thanks!

Well if you forego important featrues, matter wont matter.

It wont replace missing features that should have been included in the first place.

Standards announcements are what you announce when you don't have anything to announce.  I don't see an immediate value proposition for users here.

I am having a problem I can’t fix. When I set my heater,at night to 70°, the temperature fluctuates radically, in the night ,between 55 and 70° . It does not maintain the 70° temperature which I selected. How do I set the thermostat so that it holds the degree I selected , rather than creating such a broad crazy range? Thanks for your help?

Will Google comment on whether Nest Learning Thermostats will work with Thread/Matter? Google seems to say across all devices, but the foundation of the Nest brand seems to be left out.

interesting!

NOTE: the people seem to be working on problems, exchanging information all the time, on the regular actually. I wonder how I can get there attention, become there friends and develop with them as I develop my google nest home in the future. in a metaphysics world, that would be the occult syllogism. Also I'm currently in school to be a certified Project manager, so that creates a very interesting dynamic. I'll share the information Google Project Management  also, were now mass producing smart instruments. I can wait until we can connect that expresso machine like computer and google assistant. Here is some more information, as I sit on the sideline seeking a community to network, maybe gather once a year or so, maybe we can get something started behind the scene, and then bring it to the public in a very neat and organized fashion. Product Expert  take care, and check out that video if you haven't already, its pretty cool. Great work community.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction on how to stop someone from continuing to hack my phone and gain full access and control by changing the APN settings and creating a private custom DNS settings and is doing all of this buy a laptop or another smartphone remotely it states even there is an external keyboard and it's also done with my Smart cube Samsung TV and my surface pro and iPad and Android pad and even all of my Bluetooth speakers within my house no matter how small and minuscule like the shower speaker are all connected together turned on and fully charged when I haven't touched these devices in months I have a 2015 Galaxy core prime very old phone that is on it's charged and it has stadia and Opera downloaded on it as well as the Bluetooth turned on and again synced with all the others.

The only reason I post within here is because my regular email address that I've always had since 2019 now that I have it tracked back has been considered a work profile email address it also States that I have a Google nest and Google Chromecast. I apparently acquired these under this email address and received three months worth of YouTube prime or no ads for 3 months as well as a stadia gaming pass for one month. Yet it continues on I still have Microsoft in which this account is used and has gained within Microsoft an entire Microsoft 365 office with a Microsoft One cloud and Skype as well as an Xbox account and ID which I am not aware of the credentials of those other than the person I know to be doing this repetitively and only one that has access to all my devices has his credentials name wise birthday wise but yet my credentials as far as Internet or social media.

Hi I have  a question I have a vrf system (samsung). Is nest thermostat compatibility with samsung vrf system?

All my matter devices disconnect from my Google home network as soon as I add a nest camera to the Google Home network. Is there anyone who can help me fix this issue as it's pretty annoying to have to use two different apps to manage my home. My devices are using matter over thread and my Nanoleaf thread light works fine but my Eve Motion sensor and Eve smart plugs with matter only work until I add a nest camera to my Google Home Network.

When is the Nest Wifi update coming?

Arthur_Gray
Community Member

@NSBiscuit I am with ya, I suspect Google is trying to get the entire Nest Learning Thermostat functionality moved from the Nest app to the Home app -- and the preview for the Home app is REALLY nice so far!

I think they're waiting to say whether or not it will be added based on what difficulties show up -- it is possible it just isn't worth it in the end, but since Google still sells the Learning Thermostat v3 as a main Thermostat item, I think they're trying really hard.

NSBiscuit
Community Member

@Arthur_Gray you're a bit more optimistic than me here, but I'm hoping the dozens of "what they aren't supporting the other thermostat" comments are enough to convince a PM to push this. I've been using the Starling Hub to connect my Nest stuff with HomeKit for a year or so now and it's been rock solid. That being said, I'd love to just control my Nest thermostat/Protect alarms with Matter locally (instead of having to hit the cloud first).

Happy for all the US customers but what about the UK where the latest one available is Nest Learning thermostat? Went with it instead of Hive anticipating Matter integration. Kinda regret it now…

@DMedina559I have the same question. Still running 1.1-11 and don't see anything newer. @Leticia can you clarify what code version will add Matter support for the Nest Thermostat (2020)? Are there any instructions for setup or support articles?
