I've had 2 Nest Protects connected on the network for years, but as of yesterday, neither of them will connect to the network, and they both went offline at the same time, possibly after some update to their software or the iOS app. Same router, same router settings. I've tried the troubleshooting steps and made a new home on the app, but nothing works. Can anyone help me?

Hello to all the community.
I'm based in France and I had the exact same problem as all of you.
Seeing nothing coming, I called Google Support directly and had a human being who handled the matter as follows:
He had replaced free of charge one of my detectors (which are 7 years old) for a more recent model/firmware (it a 2020 model).
To be able to make everything work again with my other detectors, I had to declare it as "master" (I had deleted all the others) and then I was able to add the other detectors by pressing this new as "Master".
Suddenly everything works perfectly again.
On the other hand, it is necessary to declare the sensor exchanged as master (or 1st) because the detectors which have the problem are not capable of playing this role.
I don't know if in the US, this could work, but since Google cannot correct its Bug, the solution they offered me works and allowed me to keep my other detectors.
Hope this helps, keep me posted.
Good luck.

Hey everyone,
Jumping back in to address some of the concerns in the thread and provide an update.
A fix was pushed live that addressed the original P009(0.80) error. However, some customers that performed a full device reset or unpaired their device while the bug was ongoing may still experience pairing issues. The team is actively working on a fix for this, and it will be part of an update for the Nest app coming early next year.
In the meantime, if you are experiencing pairing issues with your Nest Protect after performing a device reset, please reach out to our customer support through the following link: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp
Thank you for your patience,
Kelan

I am having the same issue. 6 nest protects went off line yesterday, November 15, 2023. I tried resetting the protects to factory settings and adding to my account again. No good. P009 errors. Do not reset to factory specs.
11-16-2023 06:29 AM
I agree, I reset to factory specs, and that did not solve the problem. I have made sure my router has IPv6 turned on, I am using Google Wifi routers. I removed the Protects from the Nest app, tried to add them back, same P009 error.

I just had 2 protects go offline yesterday 11/15/2023 as well. I have run through all tests short of resetting them. This looks like a Google issue they aren't acknowledging on their system status board. They had not issues for the past 6 years.
My other 6 Protects are all online. I have a couple of monitoring tools and they all show them as connected to my network.
I hope someone can shed light on this issue.

Also wanted to mention I have 3 Nest Thermostats that are connected to the network and working and one Nest Camera that is connected to the network and working. I noticed in other solutions someone said they needed to set the port forwarding in order to get this to work, I tried that, I used their port, didn't work. I can't see the firewall activity so I don't know if the port is the same. Edit- spoke to support, the port is 11095, this didn't work, support could not help me.

Same issue. I have several Nest Protects and 3 went offline today. I tried resetting and tried to reconnect and they would not connect.

I have the same problem. I have had 6 nest protect smoke detectors for 8 years now. Yesterday (Nov 15), all 6 went offline. The app shows them offline but my EERO router shows them all as online. My first clue that they were offline is the lights did not go green last night when I went to bed, the lights went red. I have tried all online solutions to no avail. This is a safety issue that must be corrected immediately. I see the nest app was updated 1 week ago. Nest support should look into this ASAP! If someone is hurt or killed due to this issue, I can see a big law suit.

Hi,
I'll escalate this to our Community Specialists at Nest to see if they have any info surrounding this uptick in that error you are getting.
Thanks for reporting!

Same Issue. 6 Nest, 3 went offline on 11/15/2023. Reset 1 to factory defaults and now will not add back to my Nest account. P009(0.80) is the error code and it fails on adding to my account. I have tried moving it to a different wifi network and different DNS settings on my router. Cleary Google is garbage.

I am now unprotected with the factory reset one, not interconnected which is a violation of my city and county's ordinances. Come on Google you can do better than this. And I have wasted hours on this since yesterday.
11-16-2023 12:02 PM
I also wasted hours on this today and yesterday. Today I was online with chat help from 11:10 AM until 12:54PM, so don't bother trying to get help or working on this, they don't know what is wrong yet. And don't reset your device, it doesn't fix the problem at this point in time.

filled out form with all serial number and version info for app and protect software versions. Thank you.

Can we get an update on this? Is Google looking into this? Seems the users are trickling in for this issue and we need an update. Some of our homes are not protected right now.
11-17-2023 09:47 AM
Can we please get some sort of update from Google Nest on this issue? Are these Protects bricked now? Do we need to get replacements?
11-17-2023 10:49 AM
I’m having the same issue as most of the people in this chat!
2 of my protects went offline and after trying to reconnect them to the Wi-Fi it fails at the last step with the P009 code. Strangely I have a 3rd protect (installed about 4 years after the others) that is still connected to the Wi-Fi, + a thermostat and doorbell that are also still running fine. Just to note, all 3 of the protects are gen 2, running software 3.5.0.3.
This is strange!?!

Form filled in…

Hi yes I am having the same problem I have called Google support and they tell me to switch of 5ghz in the router and use 2.4Ghz only I have been on the phone with Sky Broadband for 1.5 hrs tonight and have gone over all the setting and it is not the setting in the router there is a problem at Google Nest.
this happened 20hrs ago I have 2 cameras + 2 thermostats and 4 protects and all 4 protects have gone offline I have tried to re-set no good and put 1 back to factory setting and delete off my account and now I cannot add it back to my account I get P009 (0.80) error message on my account.
Google need to sort this out ASAP
All router are so advanced that they can detect if its connection to 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz.

I do have my bands separated on my router. Has been that way for years. So that has not changed on my network. I think they are just spouting off the typical punch list of ideas. Given that some have even tried a reset and it failed proves it is not our problem to fix.
11-16-2023 02:59 PM
Yes its definitely there problem to fix I have spent hours on this today if you look at the video on how to install one there is nothing about splitting you router and if you did no one will bye them.
I just wish that they will just say yes there is a problem and it will stop you from wasting your time I have also filled out the form

My Router has an IoT network that is wifi 2.4 only. I switched all my nest components over to it this morning. Did not fix anything. Just more aggravation as we all know they rolled something out and it broke things.
11-16-2023 05:14 PM
Are other people who have this problem using the iOS Nest app that was just updated? Just curious. Also, during troubleshooting, I noticed the Protects at some point had IPv4 IP addresses assigned by my router before they were reset by me (don’t do this, it doesn’t work.)
11-16-2023 06:32 PM
Same issue two of my protects went offline yesterday. Tried factory reset, restart router etc. nothing has worked.
11-16-2023 07:29 PM
Mine have been dropping steadily. No networking changes, no configuration changes. 4 out of 5 of mine are now down. Everything has been working fine for many years now with no issues. The WiFi still has 2.4g enabled and working for other devices.

This solution details that the user was able to use a very old app on an old Android phone to get the Protects to connect. I tried to find an iphone in our family with an older app version, but the oldest version on our phones was one version back, 5.72.0, as opposed to 5.73.0 which is on all our other phones, and none of these will work to let us get the Protects back on the network.
11-17-2023 06:36 AM
I tried that on an old iPhone 6 using version 5.68.0 and it all works until the final stage then the same message appears that’s it’s failed to add the nest protect to the account.
11-17-2023 11:02 AM
Just out of interest, I’m using an Android phone and still having the same issues as everyone here.
11-17-2023 06:49 AM
I don't htink it has anything to do with the app version. my devices are showing the yellow circle at night, which should have nothing to do with the app I think.
11-17-2023 09:15 AM
I was just hoping an older version of the app might get them back online....

On topic/Off issue - what devices should I consider looking at since Google doesn't seem to be commenting or offering support on this issue? My nest are 8 years old, so, they will have to be replaced anyway. Doubt I will give the beast any more money, I have an interconnect wire, never tested it (we had electrical rewiring done a few years back after we bought into Nest - I made the electrician put in the wire just in case I switched out of Nest down the road). I have power at all my smoke detectors and have enjoyed that they independently communicated without the interconnect wire. Anyone done research on this?

6 for less than the cost of 2 Nest Protects. I know what I am doing. Google can go pound sand.

I have had 3 Protects drop offline at the same time. I removed them from the account and have been trying to reconnect them. I've been doing testing and monitoring the results on my router. I reinstalled the app on my phone and disabled any VPN in operation. The Protects will configure but fail at adding the device to the account. I have done a hard reset on each one several times, with the same result each time. The device will configure and connect to my router, however the second the green light stops circling the Protects will falls off the network and not reappear. To confirm connectivity back to the Nest servers, I removed one of my thermostats from the account and was able to successfully add it back so connectivity back to Nest isn't the problem.
Based on what happened, and the testing I've done, I think a firmware update was pushed out to the Protects and it bricked the Wifi on them.
11-17-2023 09:46 AM
Thank you for the details. How did you add the Protect that you removed back to your Nest account? Was this a Protect that was still showing as online when you removed it? And if the Protects are bricked, I wonder if they can be reprogrammed with new firmware through the app, since the app can still connect to the Protect's own wifi network during the setup process.
11-17-2023 09:51 AM
Go back and re-read my posting. I said I removed a thermostat from my account and was able to re-add it. NOT a Protect. All attempts to add back the Protects, all of them, fail at the step of adding them to the account.
11-17-2023 09:52 AM - edited 11-17-2023 10:00 AM
sorry, I missed the thermostat part. Thanks for the update. I wonder if there is a way to reset to factory firmware, not just reset the setting to factory.
11-17-2023 10:02 AM
Do you have your devices under a Google account or Nest Account. The hard fact is the protects are the only devices left in the Nest app that haven't migrated to the google home app so I suspect that is why the thermostat worked and the Protects did not.
11-17-2023 10:06 AM
Converted to a Google account, which was probably a mistake.
11-17-2023 10:10 AM
My Protects were under the Nest account.
