Rc location for nest thermostat

GAJ
Community Member

I have both R and Rc wires in my thermostat.  The nest thermostat (not learning thermostat) has no connection for Rc.   Where do I install that wire?    The compatibility checker said my wires should be compatible, and all other posts only seem to troubleshoot the learning thermostats.
Thanks for any help or advice!

Hi GAJ,

Thanks for posting.

Your current heat pump system has a secondary source of power. With that said, your Nest Thermostat doesn't have a terminal to accommodate the RC wire which is intended for that wire. You can still use that and not plug in the RC wire, but I suggest replacing it with the Nest Learning Thermostat so you can fully get the most out of your system. You could also reach out to a pro technician to rewire your system to get the most out of your system.

Best,
Mel

Do you have a photo of the wire layout from your previous thermostat?

I saw somebody responded with what the Google support told me on the phone about needing the learning thermostat instead.  But if after looking at my current wiring you have any other suggestions, I’d appreciate it.
Thanks!

That's correct, you need the Nest Learning Thermostat model. As @Jhonleanmel mentioned, you essentially have 2 options:

  • Return the Nest Thermostat and purchase a Nest Learning Thermostat
  • Reach out to a pro technician to rewire your system so it's compatible with Nest Thermostat

Keeping Nest Thermostat isn't really an option because your current thermostat doesn't have an Rh wire. If you don’t have an Rh wire, the Rc wire is the power wire for both your heating and cooling systems.

Hello,

I’m going to take the advice I’ve gotten here and shop for a deal on the learning Nest.   Thanks for your help!

The company I purchased my Nest from won’t allow a return or exchange because the box was opened, so I have it posted for sale locally on FB.   Is there a place on these forums to sell products?

No I'm afraid. You could also try places such as eBay, Amazon Marketplace etc.
