I am replacing generation 1 nest protect fire alarms with generation 2. Can I use the same back plate instead of replacing?

Wired Fire Alarm Detector

If I currently have units that are wired, can I still use the Nest Protect that is not wired? Was not sure if it causes any risk to push the old wired piece into the ceiling and go non wired. Thanks.
