Nest protect 2nd battery power adapter

Hi!I noticed the Nest Protect 2nd generation has a mine USB adapter on the back. Can I add a power adapter there instead or in addition to the batteries?Thanks

How are we supposed to continue to use our Protect smoke/CO2 monitors when the Nest app is discontinued?!?! There is no way to connect them to the Home app.
