Setting resolution 4k only when playing 4k content

I'd like to have HD resolution by default used in HDMI, and only have 4k resolution when playing 4k content.i.e. if Netflix movie is 4k, TV should recognize a 4k signal; if Netflix movie is HD, TV should recognize a HD signal. Is that possible/
