Thermostat E no power on R

Hello, I’m getting an error “no power on r”. Having read a bunch of docs I think I don’t need to wire in c; nest should work on battery (which is up to 3.9 volts). However I still get no power. What am I missing? thanks

Installation

I installed everything and placed the thermostat on the base. It powered up then I get this message “please attach the display to the base” then it powers down. I removed it and tried to put it on again and the same thing happened. Suggestions?
